Conversations with Rachel Dawson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Dawson.

Hi Rachel, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We have always been passionate about supporting local businesses and our community. We also love traveling, trying different events and restaurants. In early February of 2020, we were on a walk and my husband turned to me and said, “I’ve been thinking, why don’t you start an Instagram to document our adventures?”. At first, I wasn’t sure if anyone would care or follow along, but I took the plunge and started the account. A Southern Wake Couple has turned into so much more than that. During the pandemic, we saw so many small business closing and going out of business so we made it a point to support and feature those local shops and restaurants and we continue to do that everyday with our account. We love our community and want to show all it has to offer! We’ve made amazing friends and connections through the account and feel so grateful that we get to do something we love everyday with the account!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say we’ve had it pretty easy with the account if I’m being honest. I’ve already treated it like a creative outlet, something fun to do and I think that keeps it all in perspective. There is always a learning curve when it comes creating content people can relate to and find interesting. I think the only challenge we face sometimes is finding the time to make sure we can try places. We both juggle full-time jobs and have a nine months old son, so finding time to get out to places can be difficult!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We focus on local events, restaurants and lifestyle. We do highlight some of what we do when we travel but all of our content is usually locally owned businesses wherever we go. I’m proud of being able to do my small part in helping those small businesses, they are so important to our community. We try to always be as genuine as possible on our account. We never post anything just for “likes” or anything we don’t believe in. I’m all about being real about my daily life and our experiences.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Take the plunge! If there is something you want to do, even if you’re not sure it will take off, jump in with both feet! A Southern Wake Couple has been such an outlet for me especially being a mom and working full time. It helps me take time for myself and to have fun, and if I hadn’t taken the plunge, I wouldn’t have that now!
