Conversations with Tracey Sherrod

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracey Sherrod.

Hi Tracey, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am actually very new to the flower business and self-taught. I started my shop in 2021. I have been a librarian for 22 years. I currently serve as a library administrator. I love the academic world but looking at spreadsheets and contracts was getting old. I started helping a former student with her floral business and I was hooked! It gives me a creative outlet and I enjoy watching faces light up and to see looks of appreciation in people’s eyes. I especially enjoy doing funerals. I know that sounds weird but I do. I like to think that I bring comfort to people during a difficult times.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth in the sense of learning how to make arrangements. Thank God for Youtube and a very supportive floral community. My struggle is learning the business end. So, quick story, I started with a company who helps to generate customers to you. I then found out the devil is always in the details. The amount of hidden fees were tremendous which impacted my profit substantially. I have ended that business relationship. And now, I am partnering with another small florist shop to service funeral homes and other businesses directly. I am exploring the new retail side of UberEats. I will eventually pair up with another company that generates customers and will now know the right questions to ask.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
What I am most proud of is I’m trying something new and that I have the support of my wonderful husband. I hope this encourages someone to just try. What sets me apart is that I have always had a heart for people. I called it Divine Design because my husband and I have a started a ministry called Divine Purpose Tabernacle Int’l Church. I just have a heart for God and a heart to serve. Though I am new to this, I want people to see the beauty and grace in all of my arrangements.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe in God’s grace and mercy. It’s those two things that have kept me and as afforded me the opportunity to start this business.
