Today we’d like to introduce you to Trinidy Cross.
Hi Trinidy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started getting into makeup my freshman year of high school. I would see all the girls wearing makeup and I’d honestly talk about them to my friends. I thought they looked crazy and I wanted to be better than them with it. I started wearing foundation my sophomore year and gradually started doing more. My mom always called it a “mask” and it was discouraging at first but once I went to college, I started wearing it more. I started as a makeup enthusiast because I’m very shy and don’t like to interact with people much but everyone around me would say, “You might as well get paid doing what you love,” and it’ll play over and over in my head all the time. Eventually when I transferred from A&T to UNCG, someone at my new school asked me to do their makeup and I said yes. I don’t know why, but I did. She paid me to do her makeup and I HATED it. After COVID-19 had us on lockdown, I had to figure out ways to make money and selling lashes was in at the time so I started a mini business with selling lashes and lipgloss. It was a hit, but I wanted more and I was so good with makeup I decided to pursue clients. I would post asking for models and I had a lot of inquiries because of the work on myself. Eventually after taking models for so long, I took clients and promoted myself more. I wouldn’t have gotten to where I am if it wasn’t for everyone pushing me to be better and pursuing my fears.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
With anything, it is NEVER a smooth road. This journey has been a very bumpy road. I would always compare my work to other’s work and doubt myself, have panic attacks before clients and sweat tremendously even when it’s not hot in the room, continuously tell myself I won’t be as good as I want to be, and just be all around negative towards myself. I needed to change my attitude to be and do better.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am known for being a makeup artist. I love what I do. I love to express myself through art and colors. I’m most proud of overcoming my fears and taking this step. My humbleness, personality, and work set me apart from others. I love to make everyone around me feel like they’re family/friends. I work to make them feel beautiful and enhance their beauty. In my book, they are all beautiful and family!
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
As a freelance makeup artist, I take risks everyday. Actually, with any career or activity, you’re taking a risk. I’m taking risks, allowing many different people and energies into my home and personal space. I don’t know what their true intentions are and it could be anything, whether harmless or harmful. You are always taking a risk no matter what you do.
