Daily Inspiration: Meet Mika James Amaya

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mika James Amaya.

Hi Mika, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My passion for Motherhood Photography started when I became a mother myself. I was in awe at how quickly my child’s face changed from the moment my OBGYN placed him in my arms to when we were in the recovery room to the day we were discharged. I immediately realized how fleeting these moments were and that once gone, would never return! My heart was full and I knew I needed to document every moment of him growing up. I now have five children and know this to be true more than ever.

I also fully believe that women are central to their families. It was important to me that I was photographed with my children. I wanted them to have tangible evidence of my love for them. This is why I designed a full-service experience around the idea that printed photos are the best way for us to truly hold on to our family’s fleeting moments and document our legacy. As a photographer who specializes in maternity, newborn, and family portraiture my inspiration comes from the simple belief that beauty lies in the fleeting, unpredictable, and sometimes hard journey known as motherhood.

I am a busy modern mother who appreciates simple luxury. I’m well aware that time with our children is fleeting and worthy to be documented elegantly. This is why my passion for photography evolved into an exclusive, luxurious, and stress-free portrait experience. My clients enjoy all the aspects of a portrait session that I love – custom session planning, a fun & enjoyable photo session, and the commissioning of luxurious artwork to display in their homes to cherish for generations to come.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road getting to where I am today. I have spent many years refining my craft, elevating my customer service, and defining my unique style.

Some of the early significant mistakes I made include: not creating technically correct images, not managing my time, forgetting to show up for portrait sessions, and deleting client files without properly archiving them – just to name a few, Thank God for progress!

One of the biggest obstacles I have had to overcome was learning how to run a profitable and sustainable business that is unique to who I am and my brand. Lastly, I have had to overcome many mental obstacles. For a long time, I struggled with the fact that no one was doing the style of photography that I loved – my style was not popular. I had to constantly remind myself that what makes my heart yearn to create beautiful, timeless, and classy images was in fact valid. I had to learn to be true to what makes my heart sing and overcome the self-doubt that clients would not want to hire me.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Mika James Amaya Photography specializes in young families, including maternity, newborn, 1st birthdays, and lovely outdoor sun-drenched family sessions. My unique style is composed of neutral colors, clean lines, elegant textures, and golden sun. I am inspired by three simple beliefs: Children are perfect. Every woman is enough. And, your life should be documented in photographs. Nothing makes me happier than being in a golden sun-filled field at sunset capturing memories a family will treasure forever.

I am most proud that the women who choose me to help document their legacy come from all walks of life. My clients are rich, poor, and everything in between, They all have different body types, different family dynamics, and different cultural backgrounds. It is beautiful knowing that what unites us is a love for organically documenting Motherhood.
