Daily Inspiration: Meet Erica and Angelo Jones of MPressed Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica and Angelo Jones of MPressed Designs.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We’ve always known the power of a t-shirt. T-shirts are more so a hidden safe space of democracy, a physical extension of what we’re feeling on any given day. T-shirts, surprisingly, serve as an open doorway or even a permission slip to share with the world our disappointments, affiliations, and aspirations. Over the years, we’ve exploited our lead designer’s artistic talents and collaborated with friends and family over t-shirt designs but didn’t give much thought into making it a business.

So, it all started late 2020 while the nation was battling a world pandemic and preparing for the 2020 Presidential Election results. We were commissioned to edit the final design and print presidential election t-shirts for a customer. The design was successful and after a family member received their t-shirt asked if we had an active website where they could see more of what we offer. We panicked, oh my goodness, I said to my husband! What are we going to do? After taking a few deep breaths, we realized this could be an opportunity to elevate a hobby and our passion for urban streetwear to the next level. A formally trained businesswoman and a self-taught designer with a vision of changing our community one t-shirt at a time were now on the horizon. There was a market for our designs; we made a business plan, made it legal, and marketed our product on an official website within a week’s time and never turned back.

MPressed Designs is an urban manufacturer of streetwear apparel dedicated to nurturing or community’s need to conquest their personal journey of growth. Our mission is to foster and promote our community’s need for self-expression and individuality through clothing. We’re a veteran-owned, e-commerce retail destination serving customers in the Continental USA. Our family spans over two generations and 84 years of active duty military service. We launched our business on October 10, 2020, in an effort to push the limits of creativity while filling a void of positive messaging in urban apparel. We’re also a husband and wife partnership dedicated to the deliverance of high-quality apparel.

Angelo, our lead designer, is steadfast in his commitment to friends and even more purposeful in his design efforts. In 2006, he was offered an opportunity to create designs for his community service organization and was successful. Over the past few years, his will to master the craft of freelance design led to a deeper purpose, extensive practice, and commitment to necessary effort. He has become a self-taught designer who enjoys pushing the limits of creative collaboration.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As a commercial designer, our biggest obstacle was identifying our niche market. Our passion for producing apparel that serves as a catalyst for change and freedom of speech in an overly saturated market was challenging. Also, finding creative ways to market our designs to our target audience wasn’t as easy of a task as we thought. We set out to inspire our communities to listen to their inner voice of reason and be prepared to ignite the power of self-expression however, finding innovative ways to seek out this market was overwhelming.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We have a long-standing love for our country that dates back two generations and 80 years of active duty military service. We both served in the United States military and retired with over 20 years active military service.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
At first glance most people look at Angelo as an African American. However, Angelo was born and lived twelve years in the Country of Panama, a Latino Country in Central America. He is fully bilingual in both English and Spanish.
