We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all — and honestly, that’s part of what shaped Sherlocks into what it is today. From the beginning, our journey has been fueled by passion, not a perfect roadmap. When we first opened as a functional glass art gallery in 2015, we had no guarantee that people would understand what we were trying to build. We weren’t a typical smoke shop, and we weren’t a dispensary yet — we were a curated artistic space with a mission that didn’t fit into any existing category. Explaining that vision to landlords, insurers, and even banks was a struggle in itself.
As the hemp industry evolved, we faced new challenges almost every year. North Carolina’s laws shifted constantly. Terms like “THCa,” “hemp-derived,” and “compliant Delta-9” were unfamiliar to most people, and we found ourselves educating customers, lawmakers, and sometimes even local officials about what was legal, safe, and beneficial. Navigating misinformation — especially around the differences between regulated cannabis and hemp-compliant THCa — required a huge amount of transparency, patience, and community outreach.
Another major challenge was finding growers and extractors who shared our values. We refused to sell low-quality mass-produced flower or distillate carts just to keep shelves full.
