Daily Inspiration: Meet Zoe Tran

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zoe Tran.

Hi Zoe, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My wife (Fiona) and I have always wanted to own an all-inclusive, queer, acrylic-free and appointment-based nail salon that provides quality services consistently. We know it would be hard and challenging, but we dearly wanted a place where we can celebrate who we are, what we stand for and at the same time welcoming others who are just like us or looking for the unique experience that we offer. And so far, we have been pretty successful in executing that mission and nurturing our loving, dedicating and positive workplace environment.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been somewhat bumpy.

1. We have a lot of difficulty with hiring since people usually don’t trust that we know what we are doing or if we are being realistic about our mission or if we are competent enough to execute such a unique way of running a nail salon. Most technicians also prefer bigger shops since they tend to be more lax on their professional requirements and tend to have a bigger team to act as a small social circle for the workers who are mostly first-generation immigrants and are constantly looking for a community to belong to while our shop is neither of those.

2. Due to the difficulty mentioned above, Fiona and I are constantly overworked. Our popularity has been growing steadily and our unique nail salon has proved to be loved by the local community but at the same time, we are constantly understaffed.

Besides that, business has always been good and we are blessed with the best group of clienteles who love and respect us like their family and we are grateful for that every day.

How do you think about happiness?
In general? Traveling with loved ones, eating good foods, finding new and exciting locations of food and fun, studying Theravada Buddhism and playing video games. Because these things make me feel most alive, entertained, excited and at peace with myself.
