Exploring Life & Business with Courtney Maloy of CocoLuxe Beauty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Maloy.

Hi Courtney, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Wow, where do I begin lol… It’s been such a journey and honestly, I had no idea I would end up here. I was a stay-at-home mom battling everything you could think of. My relationship was on the brink of demise, my work-from-home job was near impossible to do with two young children (so I was losing my job), I was in my 3rd trimester of pregnancy with my 3rd child, and we were being evicted. Yeah… things were VERY bad. After sleeping on a few couches with my children… I moved back home with my dad and again pursued a work-from-home job.

However, with a fussy premature newborn, and many late nights, it became increasingly difficult to stay awake to train for the job, so eventually, I was terminated from training. This was a pivotal moment in my life. See, years prior, I had tried my hand at an MLM job called Wake Up Now. I was introduced by one of my best friends, and while I didn’t do great at all, this business venture opened my eyes to the possibility of owning my own business. So, after my next failure with Wake Up Now, I tried my hand at selling hair extensions. This venture too failed due to a lack of working revenue and inability to build and keep inventory. This didn’t stop me though, I knew I was destined for a certain life, I just had to find out how to achieve it.

After much trial and error, it dawned on me, it would be way too difficult to build a business without revenue to build it with, so I needed a job. I started working for Instacart, delivering groceries, and making pretty decent money. With this, I purchased a bunch of mink lashes and enrolled myself in a few classes. I had figured out that it would be much simpler and more marketable to have a skill rather than a product. It was easier to push a service than it was to sell a product. This is how CocoLuxe Beauty LLC was born. I rather enjoyed doing my makeup and I had a bit of a passion for eyebrows, I had always gotten so many compliments on my brows and how well I filled them in. It was a no-brainer for me when I learned about microblading and permanent makeup, that this was the path for me.

I tried my hand at it and I was in heaven… it felt right, and I loved the feeling of making women feel beautiful. Now, more so than anything, it is my absolute pleasure seeing my client’s faces when they get off of my table and feel so much more beautiful than when they came in. I truly understand the statement, that you have to love what you do and it won’t feel like work, because I truly LOVE what I do, and I am amazed that this is my actual work. That’s it, that’s the story lol.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Building CocoLuxe Beauty LLC was far from easy. The challenges were constant, but the rewards were worth it. There are many challenges an entrepreneur will face and I have faced quite a few. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is a lack of support. Entrepreneurship is a road less traveled, so oftentimes, you’ll have doubters which can be hard. There were many times I wanted to quit, where I doubted myself and my ability to make a viable living working for myself, building my own business.

So to already have doubts of my own, imagine how hard it is when others doubt you, the family sometimes… it makes it a real task to go on, but, you do it anyway. You do it even if it’s just to prove the naysayers wrong, if that has to be your temporary motivation, then use that, because, in the end, it will all be worth it. That’s not to say there weren’t other struggles, I mean the struggle of working a job to support yourself and the business all while still building that business and being a full-time mom alone was quite the task… but it’s doable. As undisciplined as I am as a person, I had to quickly learn that the best way to deal with the challenges was to be organized and manage my time.

I started setting out tasks that I needed to complete and I would write them on a small whiteboard and check them off as I complete them. This helped me to manage so many of the challenges I once had even down to the financial challenges.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
In the mornings, I will often times listen to Tracy G, she’s an inspirational, motivational speaker that speaks my language. I’m pretty simple though when it comes to my resources.

I use a regular notebook for organization and also to write down my ideas and thoughts; there have been more times than I care to acknowledge where I had a wonderful idea that would help me in some way and before I knew it I’d forget it.

So, I find that between my spiral notebook, my music, Tracy G, and my small dry erase board… these things really help me to do my best in business and in life.
