Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Giovacchini.
Hi Devin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Raised by a bipolar, alcoholic single mom on welfare along with multiple siblings the career prospects and future for us were not very clear. Most telling was none of my older brothers had graduated from high school which put added pressure on me to be the first of my siblings to do it. As I neared the end of my high school years, I could’ve gone down 2 different paths 1. Succumb to the societal pressures and live a life of struggle and misery or join the military and take my chances there, learn a skill and break the cycle of poverty for my family. Ultimately I spent 24 years in the US Navy starting as an aircraft mechanic and then switched to recruiting. I became a career recruiter until I had completed my service, overseas in Europe. Once I had finished my military career, I wanted to do something that supported my passion and related to what I had done previously so I decided real estate was it. I love the challenge of helping someone achieve the American dream of homeownership. It’s especially important for me since I grew up with very little, owning a home was not even on my radar growing up. It wasn’t until I had joined the Navy that I realized I COULD be a homeowner. Having done that and feeling the joy that it gave my wife and me, I wanted to be able to help others navigate that process and feel the same. I received my license in Real Estate in 2010. At that time the real estate market here in Raleigh was a challenge, to say the least. At one point I had considered giving up to get another career but through opportunity and hard work, I was able to survive the real estate downturn and ultimately thrive. I’m so grateful for the opportunity and to my clients, who’ve trusted me to help THEM achieve their real estate goals. The icing on the cake is that now my oldest daughter has decided to pursue her dream of being a real estate broker and work alongside me. I truly feel like the cycle of poverty and misery has been broken!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting out in 2010, just a few short years after the Subprime collapse of 2008; the real estate market was in shambles, to say the least. In fact, my first listing clients decided to let their home mortgage lapse during the listing time period. It took me 2 years to finally realize my potential to make a career out of real estate, of course with many challenges along the way. Some other struggles included a side business as a wine bar owner only to have our partner embezzle money from our business. This, as it turned out, was a blessing in disguise. While owning a wine bar was a joy it was not going to provide the same level of financial comfort that real estate has and when this occurred it forced me to redouble my effort back to real estate.

How do you define success?
I don’t think success is defined by how much money you make or how high you climb the ladder. To me, success is measured by if an individual achieves the goals they set out for themselves. I feel while I have reached a level of success beyond some others in terms of how my business has grown, I feel successful only when I have helped my real estate clients achieve their goals, if my business continues to grow, I feel that is a by-product of being successful to that end.
