Today we’d like to introduce you to Mel McCabe.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am have always liked helping people, I knew from an early age that I wanted to help others in my career. I started off going to school thinking that I would be a medical doctor and over time I have narrowed my interests. In my graduate programs, I was able to work with people from all types of backgrounds and world views and found they all had one thing in common. No matter their current life circumstances, their goal was to be happy.
I have worked for more than two decades in the field of mental health and I love what I do. I see that there is a need to help support folks who do not meet the criteria of having a diagnosis in fine-tuning their lives. That is where I come in! I use my background and training as a doctoral-level psychologist and the skills of a life coach to help women improve their quality of life to thrive and be truly happy.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Life has definitely not always been smooth sailing. I can tell you countless stories about my struggles. They include learning English as a second language, being first-generation American, having a suicidal roommate in college, infertility treatment, being pregnant with twins in graduate school and developing resulting complications, having premature children, and overcoming the obstacles all women face.
I was able to address these obstacles and continue on my path because of the wonderful humans that helped mentor and coach me along the way.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a practicing local psychologist who also happens to be a life coach. I have two separate careers, both in the helping profession. Helping others is where it is at for me! Purpose My Life is a business I created from the ground up, it is where I do my life coaching for women.
Purpose My Life is a business designed with a real woman in mind. Through Purpose My Life I collaborate with women to find the missing links and increase fulfillment in life. I am a busy and high-achieving mom, wife, and recreational fitness enthusiast. I know a thing or two about figuring out how to fit in all of the important things. I also know how hard it can be to reduce the noise and insignificant tasks, even when they feel very important.
The truth is, the things that made us happy once upon a time, don’t always make us happy in later phases of life. I work with women who have worked hard to earn their place in the world, may or may not be parents and or partnered, who want to shift their perspective and logistics to be content and truly happy. You know, the happiness that comes along when you have checked off your list to do before starting vacation. I help women find that feeling in everyday life.
The clients I work with know that I am real. I am the real me, 100% of the time. It is impossible to separate the years of training I have had from my work as a coach. My background in psychology and therapy are assets in this work. I also walk the walk. Every skill I use with my coaching clients, I use in my day-to-day life. The life I live is also real life. I do all of the same things that you do. I workout most days and I don’t always feel like it, I hit the snooze button on the alarm, I had to learn to overcome some of my fears in starting a business and posting on social media. I share all of these experiences if they are helpful with the clients that I coach.
When I first went into the field, I was surprised to learn that there is no regulatory board for life coaches. I decided to get certified and adhere to the ethical guidelines of my certification process. I also continue to find new certifications that I believe will benefit my clients. I am certified in Life, Happiness, and Confidence Coaching (as well as others).
I also strive to give the best customer service possible, if clients choose, they can text me with questions between meetings. I know that many coaches do not do this. I know many things from my work as a licensed psychologist, among them is that most learning happens when people USE SKILLS in real life. If a coaching client has a question for me, they can ask me about that right then and there, and make meaningful changes in-between our meetings.
I offer all of my coachings virtually, so I can work with folks throughout the country. I have seen women from New York, to Florida, to California. I love when they give me feedback, some of that feedback is on my website! I love sharing the positive reviews so women can know they can trust me.
Another thing I would like for women to know is that while I am a licensed practicing psychologist. If someone wants psychological services, they are welcome to reach out to me, however, it will not be done through Purpose My Life. Finally, I want women to know that I am here to be a resource. Ask me anything, I will do what I can to build up other women (and the world). You can find me on Instagram or my website.
If you want to get to know me a bit more before reaching out, check out my Instagram (Purpose_My_Life) or my podcast (Take 5 with Dr. Mel).
Any big plans?
I would absolutely love to put together a trip for women to connect and recharge. I envision a destination event with a spa, great food, amazing views, and personal development workshops intertwined. If anyone would be interested, let me know via email! I would also post details on my Instagram!
