Exploring Life & Business with Shameshia Fennell of Billionheir Finances

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shameshia Fennell.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As I have said many times before, “I did not choose Finance, God chose Finance for me.” It all started during my senior year in high school where I needed to choose 1 main elective and one backup elective so that I could graduate early. Naturally, because I was trying to make my last year as easy as possible, I chose a cooking class and an early childhood development course. Both of my elective options were full so I was thrown into accounting; a subject I knew nothing about at the time.

It quickly grew on me as the concepts were easy for me to grasp and the subject kept me intrigued and with a thirst of wanting to learn more. It was at this time that I first developed a love and passion for finances. I remember my accounting teacher keeping me after class one day asking me to take the career more seriously by applying to colleges with accounting as my major. She kept drilling into me that my grades were immaculate and according to her 32 years of teaching – that was unusual. In fact, it was so unusual, she called it a gift from God! I took her advice and received an associate’s degree in accounting. Immediately upon graduation, I received my first job offer in the local government branch, as an accountant for my hometown.

I was stoked to be able to do what I loved, especially for the people I had known my entire life. After about three months of working for the town, I was promoted to the Finance Officer position. Although I was excited about the promotion, I was also deeply saddened by the amount of people that came to receive help but lacked financial literacy. I did my best during the one-on-one meetings with citizens to change this, but I felt it just wasn’t enough and I desperately wanted to do something to help not only my community but anyone that was willing to learn!

This is where Billionheir Finances, LLC was birthed, although at that time I was operating it as a side hustle and under a different business name. I started off hosting events in the community to teach people different financial subjects such as budgeting, credit building and restoration, the importance of saving and how to effectively save money, and investing idle funds.

During my tenure of working in my hometown, I went back to school and received a Bachelor’s degree in accounting. Shortly after, I accepted a Finance Director position in a bigger town which allowed me more opportunities and a bigger platform to not only grow my business but to also continuously teach financial literacy, while serving the community.

After about four years of running my business as a side hustle, I had received so many clients that I decided it was time to get registered with the state as an LLC and work in my business full-time. Turns out this was one of the best decisions I have ever made!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road at all. There were plenty of nights where I was up crying, confused, and disappointed because I had no idea how everything was going to work out. When I first began, I had a business partner who shortly after we started the business decided that the business was no longer a good fit for them.

From there I had to restructure and rebuild because it was still something that I wanted to pursue – just not using the same resources we began with.

I also endured a lot of hardship including going through a divorce, losing my aunt to cancer, the death of my dearly beloved grandmother, relocating to Wake Forest beginning a new financial position only to be fired 60 days later!

Throughout it, all God, my family, and close friends have been my backbone for sure! They have always given me the space, time, and support that I required to grow into the financial guru I am today!
