Hidden Gems: Meet Natosha Fleming of August June Desserts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natosha Fleming.

Hi Natosha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
August June Desserts began as a curiosity about cake decorating. I already had a love for baking but wanted to learn how to decorate cakes. I signed up for a few local cake decorating classes and was instantly hooked. The more I learned, the more it became clear that baking was more than just a pastime; it was my creative outlet. I loved the process of turning simple ingredients into something delicious and beautiful.

Before long, what was once a hobby evolved into something much more. I began sharing my “practice” creations with family and friends, and their excitement about the baked goods and encouragement inspired me to think about possibly starting a business. As word spread and orders started coming in, August June Desserts officially came to life.

The name holds special meaning — it’s a blend of my birth month, August, and my son Ryan’s, birth month of June. Drawing from my background in marketing and administrative skills, I developed the logo, then later on the website to create a brand that celebrates the art of handcrafted desserts.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I started August June Desserts, I was truly building from the ground up — funding everything myself and learning as I went. There was a lot of trial and error, from figuring out who my ideal customers were to balancing the demands of a new business while still working a full-time job. On top of that, I was a single mom, trying to make sure my son still had my time and attention.

There were (and still are) long nights, early mornings, and plenty of lessons learned, but each challenge helped me grow — not just as a business owner, but as a person. Those challenges taught me how to be resourceful, patient, and persistent. Each step helped shape the business into what it is today.

What keeps me motivated is knowing that every cake I create has a story behind it. Whether it’s a birthday, wedding, or milestone celebration, I get to be a small part of someone’s special moment — and that never gets old. I’m inspired by my clients’ trust in my creativity, and their reactions when they see their cake for the first time. The journey hasn’t always been easy, but seeing how far August June Desserts has come and how many memories have been made along the way keep me passionate about the business.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Each order is unique and crafted to reflect my client’s personality, favorite colors, or special themes. I love it when clients trust me to turn their ideas into edible art.

What I am most proud of is how far this journey has come. I built August June Desserts from the ground up, transforming a personal hobby into a recognized brand known for excellence, artistry, and heartfelt service in Charlotte’s dessert community. Every cake is a reminder that passion, hard work, and a love for creating can turn something small into something truly meaningful.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is spending time at my grandparents’ house in Miami. Their home was the heart of our family — full of laughter, and simple joys.

I loved sitting on the front porch, playing with my cousins, and walking to the corner store with Papa or tagging along with Grandma on trips to Zayre. Grandma never missed an episode of All My Children or The Price Is Right, while Papa loved watching wrestling and boxing. And I can’t forget trying to catch the ice cream truck whenever it came down the street.

Those were such good times — carefree and filled with moments that still make me smile.
