Today we’d like to introduce you to Shirley Harvey.
Hi Shirley, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Shirley Harvey Experience Events & Design (S.H.E.) officially was launched shortly after planning my own Wedding in 2017. I like to consider myself a creative, I love all things decor-related. While planning, I realized I enjoyed every aspect of the process from choosing a venue down to picking specific linens and centerpieces for the tablescape. Shortly after the success of the Harvey Ever After Experience, I was asked by a family member if I could help with the decor of an upcoming wedding for a friend. I had never been paid to provide decor services before especially for such a memorable occasion but because I had faith in my capabilities, I accepted the job and I was paid to do something I loved. After the completion of the decor installation and seeing the bride & groom’s face I knew at that moment I wanted to provide planning & decor services. After marketing my services, business picked up with different inquires which gave me the opportunity to explore other celebrations and parties.
Today S.H.E. provides planning and design services for Weddings and Events in and out of North Carolina.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a fun run and learning experience so far but not an easy road. There are many event designers that I look up to and I have to remind myself that they didn’t start there. When first starting out I had no idea how to price my packages but I had to realize my worth and change my mindset that my services was apart of a business and not a hobby. Now that I have crossed that barrier I am now able to reach my ideal clients. Another challenge that I have found while planning and designing events has been deciding on a niche. It’s been really hard for me to choose one niche to focus on because I love all events and all the elements that bring an event to life. I’m great at planning weddings but I also don’t mind helping a group of friends throw an epic bridal shower or a mom that needs help decorating a child’s birthday party. This hopefully won’t be a challenge for me much longer.

Shirley Harvey Experience Event Planning & Design has one goal in mind: to produce + design creative and unforgettable experiences for every occasion.
From small intimate affairs to large-scale parties or weddings, I strive to execute events that not only aim to impress but also create unique experiences for my clients and their guests that last long after the fun is over.
I have worked with clients from different backgrounds, tailoring each event to meet their specific needs and desires based on their budget.
Some of my specialties consist of seamless planning & coordination, tablescape designs and balloon garland installations.
I pride myself in the designs I create because no event will be the same and that sets me apart from my competitors.
I thrive on making my client’s dream event a reality.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice for those just starting out is to just start. Don’t focus on not having a ton of money for startup costs use what you have. Saving money from your full-time job can help fund your new business venture. You can also start by offering free planning services or free party decor to a friend or family member and use those photos for marketing exposure. Find a mentor in the industry and seek advice when needed. Look for local planners and become an intern to learn the ropes and network with local vendors.
