Today we’d like to introduce you to T.C. Barbour.
Hi T.C., thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
From Stress Relief to Small Business: The Story of Barbour Lab Customs
My woodworking journey began as a form of stress relief while I was working at State Employees’ Credit Union. It all started with a simple need — I wanted a stylish yet functional place to hang my suit jacket. That idea led to creating my first project: a North Carolina–shaped coat rack.
To my surprise, several people showed interest and asked me to make one for them. Over the years, I honed my skills by crafting pieces for friends and family, which gradually grew into a steady stream of custom requests. When the time was right, I decided to say goodbye to SECU and take the leap into the wild adventure of business ownership.
With the unwavering support of my wife, Ashley, our small business has continued to grow. What began as woodworking has now expanded to include laser engraving, crocheted items, jewelry, retail signs, drinkware, and more.
We typically sell at pop-up events, but you can most often find us at the State Farmers Market or through our online store at barbourlabcustoms.com. Ashley and I are deeply thankful for everyone who has supported us along the way. We can’t wait to see what the future — and God — has in store for us.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like any small business, ours has faced its share of bumps in the road. Not everything has been smooth sailing, and one of the biggest challenges has been finding a healthy work-life balance. I tend to work long hours, and my wife has her own full-time career during the week, so carving out time for everything — and for each other — can be a juggling act.
Another challenge has been sourcing specific types of wood. I take pride in using locally sourced materials whenever possible, but certain projects call for specialty wood that can be harder to find.
Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to work with Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment. As an environmentally conscious organization, they requested a federally recognized wood that was ethically grown and harvested to the highest standards. It took some time to track down FSC-certified wood for their custom coasters, but when I saw how much they loved the final product, every bit of effort was worth it.
As you know, we’re big fans of Barbour Lab Customs. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
At Barbour Lab Customs, we take pride in turning creativity and craftsmanship into meaningful, one-of-a-kind pieces. What started as a simple woodworking hobby quickly grew into a passion-driven business built on quality, detail, and faith.
We specialize in custom woodworking, laser engraving, and personalized gifts — including home décor, drinkware, jewelry, crocheted items, and retail signage. Every item is made with care and attention to detail, often using locally sourced wood and materials whenever possible.
What truly sets us apart is the personal touch we bring to everything we create. Whether it’s a custom cutting board, a hand-engraved sign, or a piece of art that celebrates a special memory, we work closely with our customers to make sure their vision comes to life.
We’re most proud of how our brand reflects our faith, hard work, and the support of our community. Every order, big or small, represents not just a product but a connection — a reminder that small businesses can still make a big impact.
At the heart of it all, Barbour Lab Customs is about craftsmanship, family, and gratitude. We’re thankful for every person who’s supported our journey and can’t wait to see where this path leads next.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I’ve had a number to mentors over the years that have taught me alot about business and life in general but my best supporter is my wife Ashley. She is there to say the right words when i get frustrated or struggling. Without her this business would not have lasted.
