Inspiring Conversations with Dar Mayweather of Good Mayweather Consulting, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dar Mayweather.

Hi Dar, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I never set out thinking I would one day become a professional speaker. My journey started in higher education, where I was responsible for training resident assistants (RAs) during my very first professional role. I poured myself into leading a program that would challenge them to think deeper, reflect harder, and do their role more intentionally. What I didn’t expect was the flood of students who came back to me throughout that year, saying, “That training changed the way I lead.” That was the first time I realized I had a gift for facilitation and helping people move from potential to performance.

Over time, I shifted from serving in administrative roles to creating leadership development experiences for college students, educators, and emerging professionals. That transition wasn’t overnight; it resulted from years of teaching, mentoring, and finding ways to make leadership practical and inspiring. Today, I travel the country speaking at universities, TRIO programs, and conferences, helping people define their leadership style, build inclusive practices, and lead with clarity. What started as one RA training over 15 years ago has become a calling: empowering others to see leadership not just as a title, but as a process you develop over time.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not always been smooth, yet I am equally grateful for the ups and downs. When I first began, I struggled with imposter syndrome, wondering if my voice mattered in a space where so many leaders were already speaking. I did not feel smart enough or that I had enough experience. I compared my career to my peers and colleagues, watching them be promoted to VPs, Deans, and Directors in education, while I was still working an entry-level job. I also had to learn how to balance the business side of speaking with the passion I had for teaching. Early on, I gave away my time and expertise without charging, simply because I didn’t know how to value my work. Although I would not change that season in my life, giving away my time and expertise got harder and harder as my family grew.

Another challenge has been navigating the changes in higher education itself. Budgets tighten, priorities shift, and yet the need for leadership development never goes away. There were seasons where doors closed in my career and business, and I questioned if I should keep going on this path. But each time, the impact stories from students and professionals reminded me why I started. Those moments of doubt became fuel to refine my craft, build stronger partnerships, and keep showing up for the people who needed my message most.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business name is Good Mayweather Consulting, LLC, and early on, I branded myself as Doing the Good Work. Through my comapny, I deliver keynote speeches, workshops, and resources that center on leadership. What sets me apart is the way I merge academic insight with real-world practice to create experiential learning through activities and assessments. I’m not just giving a lecture; I use an entire room to give people tools and lessons they can use the next day in their role as a student leader, educator, or professional.

I specialize in helping organizations build stronger leadership pipelines by helping people gain clarity on the impacts of their mission and vision-driven leadership. My signature keynote, From Potential to PERFORMANCE, is all about moving people from simply having talent to actually executing with confidence and purpose. I do this by guiding people through a step-by-step process where we identify their strengths and values, craft their mission, vision, and impact statements, develop their inspirational leadership story, and build an action plan to align with the right opportunities in their industry. By the end, they have a clear strategy to create both impact and income. I also provide toolkits, courses, and workbooks that make leadership inspiring, accessible, and not intimidating and riddled with comparison.

What I’m most proud of is the brand consistency: people know me for showing up with energy, authenticity, and a clear standard of excellence. Whether it’s a room of 50 students or a conference of 1,000 professionals, my goal is always the same: help people walk away with a renewed sense of confidence and a practical next step they can use immediately.

For your readers, I want them to know that leadership isn’t just for those with titles or corner offices. My work is about showing everyday people how to lead themselves first, so they can impact others in meaningful ways and pursue the life they want to live.
