Inspiring Conversations with Kishia Swift of Bull City Inflatables

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kishia Swift.

Hi Kishia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Bull City Inflatables started in the fall of 2016 after some planning and research into the local kid’s entertainment industry. After looking for an inflatable company for a neighborhood block party, I learned that there were not many minority-owned and operated businesses in the area. I always look for women-owned businesses and found that there wasn’t any in the area for inflatables.

I talked with a local operator and found out that this was something I was very interested in and could manage on my own without much help and low capital. I started with 3 inflatables and worked them on the weekends while I was still working FT. After some good mouth-to-mouth and business referrals, I was in a position to hire staff and work my business FT after a year and a half.

Bull City Inflatables has since grown into a local brand and a go-to business for kids’ entertainment! We cover Durham and all surrounding areas up to 50 miles. We have over 15 inflatables and other entertainment items and we do everything from residential rentals to festivals like Bimbé.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say running a business is a lot of ups and downs and every turn there is something I need to learn and overcome. Some of the struggles I have been through are staffing, inflatables repairs, trailer control challenges, learning how to manage assets and liabilities, financial challenges with county and sales, and using taxes and COVID!

But I’ve learned that you just have to take one day at a time, call a friend, talk to those in positions similar to my own, take me time, read, and network. Every conversation with someone could lead to a helping hand!

We’ve been impressed with Bull City Inflatables, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Bull City Inflatables is a minority woman-owned business, that is family-operated. We operate in the RTP area, and do services from residential to business to all sorts of entertainment for kids and teens!

We pride ourselves on great customer service, quality, and safe products! We also operate a food Truck, Bull City Eatery!

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love my Bull City and its citizens! I’m an implant from Philadelphia about 17 years ago but this is my home and I always tell people that I didn’t start living until I moved to Durham! It’s “cityish” but has a suburban appeal with chill, cool folks and country charm. It’s diverse and everyone really supports each other!

I’ve had customers since I’ve started and they are still customers today but have brought over so many others because of their support! Word of mouth referrals is still one of the best compliments we could ever get!
