Inspiring Conversations with Lynda McDonell of PiqueProsperity

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lynda McDonell.

Hi Lynda, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Finance has always been one of my superpowers. I began my career as a CPA and subsequently moved into corporate finance leadership roles. Although the work was fulfilling, when our children came along, my husband and I made an unregrettable decision for me to take a step back from the corporate world to be a stay-at-home mother to our boys. Cutting our income in half was a significant challenge, and we had to make countless trade-offs during that period. Not to mention we were also challenged with corporate relocations on FOUR separate occasions, which presented its own financial, mental, and emotional challenges. Although the road was definitely bumpy at times, thankfully, I had my financially literate background to help us figure it out.

It was my focus on family and finances that made me realize how much I enjoy helping individuals achieve financial freedom, especially women. It started as hobby coaching friends and family until they insisted (and I finally realized) that I should use my superpower for others too. Financial coaching is now my purpose-led career. I know financial stability feels out-of-reach for so many but it is like anything that is worth doing – it takes practice, a strong will for change, and a mentor who can share the skills required for success. I deeply enjoy sharing my expertise and working one-on-one with people to achieve financial stability and make their dreams come true. That sparkle in their eye and spring in their step when they have paid off their last debt, and start saving for the things they want, fuels my fire!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I started as a financial coach after many years of being a homemaker. It was incredibly difficult getting back into the workforce. I had thought about it for many years but kept discounting myself. I remember feeling worthless and that no one would want my “stale” skills, with a large gap in my resume. I even turned down offers to work because I felt I was an imposter. My mindset was not in the right place. I was letting my situation define me. Until I realized that going back to what I used to do was no longer what I even wanted to do. I had changed as a person; my passions had changed, my “why” had evolved. When I focused on what my true skills were and what the gave me the most energy, that is when I unleashed my superpowers and found my purpose-led career in financial coaching. I now wake up each day and am excited to get after my workday!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I help women and couples figure out their finances and gain confidence with their money life. I empower them to get in the path to saving for emergencies and big purchases, to get out of debt, to plan ahead, start building wealth and up-leveling their mindset to achieve prosperity. Prosperity is SO MUCH MORE than wealth – it connects the dollars and cents to a positive mindset to understand your “why” and have all your financial goals tied into those things.

I work with single professional/entrepreneurial women and their partners. I specifically focus on a women “first” approach because financial education and empowerment is so important for women of all ages. If they’re in a relationship, it is 100% okay to allow one partner to manage the day-to-day finances, but having BOTH partners involved in the financial decision-making process is not only critical to financial health but also relationship health as well. Finances can be incredibly stressing on relationships. Having partners on the same page makes a significant difference in the ability to weather financial storms effectively.

Usually, clients come to see me after a financial “wake-up call.” It could be a significant event or a series of small events that have built up over time. Some people need help with the question, “I make good money, where did it all go?”. These clients are often frustrated with their financial progress or have a specific goal in mind and need help understanding their money and setting up a system. That is what my Clarity Session will assist with. We will look at where all your money is going, figure out what has been holding them back, and get them on the right track to be able to manage it on their own.

Other clients need a deep-dive not only into their finances, but also into their decision making process around money.  They need a partner to walk them through figuring out where they are truly at with their money, and work through monthly budgeting/life cycles to review and adjust as necessary. But it’s MORE than the numbers, they need someone to help them learn more about their money mindset – what has gotten in the way of their success in the past, and how to change the way they think about money moving forward into their abundance. For these women, my recently-launched longer-term Prosperity Monthly Mentorship program is a perfect fit. This program is $195 per month, with a four-month minimum commitment.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The quality that I feel is most important to my success as a financial coach is empathy. Money is a very intimidating thing for many people and can every carry a great deal of shame and embarrassment. Although money seems like such a concrete thing, long-term success with money is actually based on mindset and feelings, which don’t have numbers attached to them.

I lead with empathy in my practice. You can find money literacy information all over the internet, but what you can’t easily find is someone who understands YOUR own individual story, your challenges in order to make money relatable, and how to develop strategies that can work in your unique and individual situations. It’s called “PERSONAL finance” for a reason because it’s more PERSONAL than FINANCE. I meet clients exactly where they at. There are NO “should” discussions. We talk about THEIR goals, their “why” and develop an action plan to get there. When it all tie-in like this, clients feel a personal investment into their financial lives and are motivated to stay with it to achieve their goals and reach prosperity.
