Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Mejia.
Hi Andrea, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Honduras, and some of my happiest childhood memories were of pretend play — imagining myself as a doctor, a teacher, or other roles. After moving to the U.S., I took a position in a Spanish immersion program at Elon Elementary, and being around children reminded me how much I loved creating spaces for learning, play, and imagination.
That’s what inspired me to open Kiddy Town. I wanted to build a place where young children could play freely, learn through creative experiences, and where parents could feel part of a welcoming community. One of my favorite areas here is the ball pit, not just because it’s fun, but because it also helps with sensory play. I also love our pretend play areas — they take me right back to my own childhood.
Like many small businesses, the journey hasn’t always been easy. It takes a lot of work to grow and bring in enough families each day. But seeing the joy in the kids’ faces, hearing parents share how much their children love coming back, and knowing that we’re making a positive difference keeps me motivated.
Kiddy Town has grown into more than just a playground — it’s a space where families can connect, children can discover new interests, and the community can come together. Whether it’s through creative programs, themed events, or simply a day of play, my hope is that every visit leaves families with special memories and a sense of belonging.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a completely smooth road. We opened Kiddy Town on December 7, 2024, and in these first months I’ve learned so much about running a business — and I know there’s still a lot more to improve. One of my biggest challenges has been marketing. I’ll admit it’s not my strength, but I’m actively working on getting better so more families can discover us and everything we have to offer.
Even with the challenges, I see each obstacle as part of the learning process. Every day I learn something new that helps me grow, both as a business owner and as a person. And at the end of the day, seeing the kids enjoy themselves and hearing parents share their positive experiences makes all of the effort worth it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In the past, I worked as a teacher in a Spanish immersion program at Elon Elementary. Teaching was such an important part of my journey because it gave me a deep understanding of how children learn, grow, and thrive through play, creativity, and connection. Even though I don’t teach in the classroom anymore, those years shaped the way I see childhood development and continue to inspire the work I do today.
Now, I focus on running Kiddy Town, an indoor playground and activity center for children ages 8 and under. My vision has always been to make it more than just a playground. I want to continue promoting opportunities that encourage growth, imagination, and social development because I truly believe they are key to children’s well-being.
What I’m most proud of is creating a space where families feel welcome and children can just be themselves. What sets me apart is how I bring my background in education together with my passion for play — blending fun and learning in a way that leaves a positive and lasting impact on families in the community.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Yes — my advice would be to just start, even if everything isn’t perfect. I’ve learned that along the way you grow, adapt, and discover what works best for you and your business. Don’t be afraid to try new things, because sometimes the ideas that feel like a risk end up being the most rewarding.
When I first opened Kiddy Town, I thought I had to have it all figured out. What I’ve learned is that it’s okay to take it step by step. My next step, for example, is to implement a small café inside the playground. It’s something new for me, but I believe it will add to the experience for families, and I see it as part of continuing to grow and improve. Combining and trying different things is how you find what truly works.
