Life & Work with Christen Funderburk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christen Funderburk.

Hi Christen, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
So my journey began my senior year of college. My entire life, I’ve dealt with eczema… so when I got to college I treated it the best I could, but one day I just got so fed up with the laundry detergent I was using. Mind you, I’m a broke college student that didn’t have money to keep testing out different detergents because they all seemed to give me the same reaction. I used to itch and break out so bad, one day I said to myself…” I’m going to try and make my own laundry detergent “ and I did.

That semester I was living with two other female roommates… so you know we all washed clothes pretty heavily. The 5-gallon pail, I made had lasted us the entire semester. I even had family and friends ask me to make some for them. At the time, I was not thinking about solving anyone’s problems but my own. However, with this, I discovered that so many people also deal with eczema and many do not know how to solve it.

Once I realized that I could start a business and people would actually support me, it was game over. I turned my pain into a passion and then turned it into profit. I’m just glad that I can be of service to those that need the relief. Today, we have 20+ products that cater to people with eczema and other skin conditions and our products have helped people all around the world.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh my goodness, no lol. There were so many days I felt like giving up but I remembered that people were counting on me and that made me keep pushing. The biggest struggle was finding capital. I continued working a full-time job to investing my own money into my business, did pitch contests, and applied for grants.

Another struggle was finding my voice. I’m such an introvert, but having this business has given me extrovert experience haha. I absolutely love people, but I’m still an introvert at heart.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an eczema specialist, I’ve done tons of research in this field. I am also almost a licensed esthetician, so I know lots about skincare in general. I have a degree in criminal justice that I don’t use haha and I’m also a notary for the state of NC.

Any big plans?
Whew! This is a good question because often I just move in silence and make announcements later, haha. However, in the next 2-4 years, I would love to expand and open a store in Charlotte NC, Atlanta, and New York, or Maryland. That’s where the majority of our customers are and expanding/scaling has always been part of my plan.

Also, once I get my esthetician license I plan to start spa services that help people with eczema, hyperpigmentation, etc.
