Life & Work with Jack The Radio of Raleigh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack The Radio.

Hi Jack The Radio, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
We’re a roots-rock band based in Raleigh, North Carolina called Jack the Radio. We like to blend rock and blues sensibility with Americana, folk, and country to create our own southern-tinged sounds with an indie rock twist. We’ve shared the stage with Hall and Oates, The Avett Brothers, George Thorogood, and American Aquarium. Our music has been featured in commercial, film, and TV projects including Modern Family, Boardwalk Empire, AEW, NASCAR, and NFL programming.

Like many bands, we’ve been through line-up changes, hiatuses, and multiple studio album since forming at NC State University back in the summer of 2005, but our current line up was solidified in 2019 with Creatures album with
George Hage (vocals, guitar, mandolin), Danny Johnson (guitar, keyboard, lap steel, vocals), Dan Grinder (bass), and
Kevin Rader (drums, vocals). We’ve all played in various bands and projects during that time, but we keep coming back to make records, comics, and play regional concerts.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Writing and recording music, playing shows, and keeping a band going has been full of ups and downs, but we’d do it all over again.

I’d say keeping a band together over the years isn’t always easy. Being friends and enjoying hanging out definitely makes it easier, but often times life happens. I’m lucky enough to still call past members friends, but priorities change, families grow, and things like day jobs can take people in different directions. Any time I find myself feeling down it reminds me to enjoy the moments more when things are going good. The down times can also be a good time to look back at any successes, since those can be easy to forget when you’re always looking forward.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Jack The Radio is a musical group. Our focus is making albums, sometimes comic books, and playing regionally in the south east. Looking back at the past 10+ years I’m proud we were able to make the albums we did that afforded us the chance to open for legends and meet and hang out with so many wonderful people!

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
We love that our city has a history of great artists and musicians, venues, record shops. As the city grows we’ve also enjoyed seeing more street events, music festivals, art festivals, and opportunities for artists and musicians to have a platform to develop and grow.

But sometimes as the city grows some of the old gems get pushed out and things change, but it’s great to enjoy them while we can. It’s good reminder to support the places you want to see and the art you want to see and hear.
