Life & Work with Josy Vandruff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josy Vandruff.

Josy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Brazil and moved to the US when I was around 16 years old. I graduated college in Respiratory Therapy and I have been in the field for over 10 years. I’ve been married for 15 years and have 3 little boys. I always enjoyed making gifts for others and enjoyed seeing them receive something unique and one of a kind.

I started to craft and make glittery things as gifts and my husband with his entrepreneurial ideas suggested I start my small business. I then started my Etsy shop Madebyjosy in 2019. I slowly started to learn new skills and work on different items and I now have over 170 different items in my shop.

I have recently sold over 4,700 items on Etsy and several items locally. I sell personalized glittery tumblers, badge reels, custom stamps, glittery pens, and much more! Some of my best-selling items are items geared toward the medical field like my Oxygen tank water bottle, or propofol glittery pen.

My social media is growing more and more each day with over 10k followers on TikTok and almost 10k on Instagram.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been an easy ride, I have had to watch lots of videos and try different products in order to be able to sell awesome items.

Some of the struggles in this business are not always knowing what will sell or what items people will be interesting in purchasing.

Sometimes having an idea and investing in something might not always turn out to be a good selling item,

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a Respiratory therapist, I worked in the hospital and recently moved to NC from Arizona and I am now focusing on my small business and not working in the hospital, enjoying raising the kids and taking a break from the medical field. I love creating new things and learning new techniques.

It is also fun creating items that the medical workers will enjoy and get a kick out of, it’s not every day you can walk around with a glittery Ativan (anxiety drug) pen in your pocket. I also enjoy making items for teachers, Respiratory Therapists, CNAs, and moms.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think having good customer service and having unique items is very important to succeed in this business. Always being active and engaging in social media is also a major way to succeed and get more clients.
