Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Crutchfield.
Hi Morgan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always known my mom to have a love for photography, but I recently discovered my great grandfather also had a passion for it. I guess that’s where it really started and had a trickle effect all the way down to me. Growing up, my mom took hundreds of pictures (they are awesome to look at now) and encouraged me to do the same. I didn’t have my own camera just yet, but she would always surprise me by stuffing about 8 (literally 8) windup cameras in my suitcase whenever I traveled with my jump rope team. In high school, when I finally did get my first camera, I was that girl always in ya face taking a picture. Haha. Fast forward to college, I changed my major Junior year to mass comm., took a photojournalism course, rocked it, and was invited to work as a photographer for the campus paper. I think that is when I realized I had a talent for something other than sports and decided to dive! After graduation, photography was still only a hobby. It wasn’t until some friends from middle school noticed I loved taking photos and asked if id photograph their wedding. Of course, I accepted and it’s been on since then. Lol. And that was August 2013. Been growing ever since.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think anything you are super passionate about or put your energy into is “smooth,” but that’s also the beauty of it. Because whenever you do get over whatever bump there was, I mean, it just makes it that much sweeter on the other side. My biggest struggle honestly has been within and always being confident in knowing that I do have something of value to offer. I am talented and have the expertise, that’s why people hire me. They (my clients) see it so why shouldn’t I?
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I don’t think my “niche” is traditional. If you go to my Instagram, you don’t only see weddings or only newborn portraits. I like to say I specialize in moments. My Instagram feed is filled with moments. Beautiful moments, sad moments, funny moments, serious moments, etc. I love helping my clients bring their special moments to life. Well technically freeze them in a photo, but you get what I mean. It’s super cool that majority of my clients turn into friendships and I get to be an honorary member of the fam in the most intimate spaces sometimes. I feel lucky to attract such good energy.
I think what sets me apart is my desire to truly connect with my clients before even picking up the camera. I like to know anything they are willing to share down to something as basic as their favorite color. It helps with their vision. It helps with those moments I mentioned earlier. I believe that’s why those same clients come back. Not only because the photos were bomb :-), but because they remembered the experience and how they were treated.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
DON’T SELL YOURSELF SHORT! Because if you do, you already know everybody else will. Previously, I mentioned my struggle with confidence. I believe that goes hand in hand with charging what you are worth. I’ve had to speak myself into realizing that my work is indeed amazing and the right people will appreciate and value my expertise to pay what I am worth. God puts people in your life to bless you and takes people away to protect you, I think your rates kinda do that too. LOL! But for real.
