Life & Work with Sarah Landis of Chapel Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Landis.

Hi Sarah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
We were formed in the fall of 2022. Bassist and songwriter Sarah ran into her old time drummer friend and asked him to start a punk band. She had been wanting to start a punk band for a long time, but needed to find the time and the right people. The band added Ash Graña on vocals and Shane Peterson on guitar, who are all long time musicians in the area. We collaborated with songwriting to record our first album which was released in August of 2024. A lot of people have helped us get to where we are today and we are so grateful for our wonderful music community. Chris Wimberley from Nightsound Studios was super supportive early on and we still rehearse at his studio today. Fuji from The Local 506 has also been an invaluable asset, we spent many afternoons talking through ideas and way to advance our band with him. We were fortunate to record our debut LP with Scotty Sandwich in Oxford, NC. He’s had so much talent come through his studio and we feel lucky to be added on that list. In general, we love making music together as Narsick are so grateful to do it!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been quite a varied road, sometimes smooth and sometimes bumpy! We consider ourselves a family, but like any family have challenges along the way. We all have other external commitments, booking problems, press rejections but we deal with everything as it comes. We communicate well and make sure to continue to make our music process productive, enriching and fun. We have all learned a lot from each other and from the process. We are a very DIY band and learn by trial and error. For example, our first tour was supposed to be a week, but we only ended up with two tour dates. We still had a blast and had the best time ever! Another struggle can be balancing our personal lives and the band. There are times when the band requires a lot from people and that requires sacrifices. All of us are very lucky to have supportive partners who understand when we get busy.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Narsick is a local band in the triangle music scene. Musical genres are fluid, but today we’ll call it indie punk. We are known for captivating live performances that are always dynamic and entertaining. We have fun on stage and it shows! We are most proud of our process of working together and creating productively and harmoniously. This also shines through in our songs because each person has a little bit of their own influence that can be heard. We are also proud of our positive press we have received. It feels great to be be recognized for our hard work, and we’re always thrilled when people like the music we make. It’s still a pleasant surprise each time we get a press review. We are also super proud of getting the opportunity to play with Alien Ant Farm! We had a blast and that was definitely a highlight in our band’s history.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
We think it’s important that people don’t let preconceived notions about music stop them from trying to pick up and instrument or from joining a band. While we take our band and making music seriously, it is supposed to be fun and enjoyable. We try to not take our selves too seriously!
