Meet Angelica McDonald of McDonald Law, PLLC and Activate Sports Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelica McDonald.

Hi Angelica, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Since high school, I knew I wanted to work in the sports industry and be my own boss. My dreams transitioned from aspiring to be a college basketball recruiter to a sports agent. While in college, I was dating a guy who encouraged me to attend law school, so I attended law school at North Carolina Central University School of Law and received my JD in 2014.I took it a step further because I’m a nerd and got an LL.M (Master of Laws)an advanced law degree in Entertainment and Media Law. I started my law firm in 2016, and I haven’t looked back. In the last year, I have transitioned my law firm to focus specifically on serving small business owners, athletes, entertainers, and content creatives by helping them protect their assets, brands, and interests through contract creation, entity formation, and trademark registration. I recently became a licensed sports agent in North Carolina and with the National Basketball Player Association. Right now, my focus is on helping college athletes secure name, image, and likeness opportunities and build and grow their brands.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road whatsoever. Because I’ve known what my dream was for a very long time, it seemed like it was taking forever for my dream to come to fruition. There was so much maturity that I had to gain and things I had to go through to be ready for where I am now, but of course, I didn’t see it that way. I just knew I was tired of waiting. With waiting comes insecurity and doubt, so it took a while to get outside of my head and just put myself out there. Honestly, it still is a task, but I’m much more comfortable in who I am and who put me on this earth to help others. Being an entrepreneur is tough. Some months are slow, and other months are great. I’m a person who loves consistency, so not having a regular job where I know how much I will get paid each pay period has been a significant challenge, but God has sustained me for over 5 years, so I know I have to keep going.

As you know, we’re big fans of McDonald Law, PLLC, and Activate Sports Group. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
My law firm, McDonald Law, PLLC, provides effective legal solutions to protect our clients’ assets, brands, and interests. Our practice areas are intellectual property (trademark and copyright), sports, entertainment, and business law. We serve small businesses, athletes, entertainers, and creatives. We help our clients through entity formation, contract/document creation and negotiation, and trademark and copyright registrations.

My sports agency, Activate Sports Group, is a premier agency that offers top-tier representation to college and professional athletes. We create limitless opportunities for our clients to leave a legacy that aligns with their goals, passions, and dreams. Our clients are our top priority, and we are committed to providing the best representation for our athletes. Activate Sports Group isn’t the average sports management company; we provide innovative strategies highlighting black excellence while positioning our clients for success.

What I specialize in and what sets me apart is creating and implementing specialized strategies for my clients. My clients need to know that they aren’t just a number; I care about them individually. Often, people use the same method for each person they work with. Everyone is different, so to give my clients a personal touch, I learn their interests, goals, values, and what’s important to them, then create and provide custom plans and strategies for them. This also allows me to be innovative, creative, and think outside the box.

I’m super proud of my law firm because I’ve been able to hold it down, operate, and thrive amid a pandemic. Many businesses didn’t survive, so it’s a blessing for me. But also, I was able to start my sports agency during a pandemic which has been my dream for many years. I want readers to know I work with people who align with my goals, morals, and values, and I align with theirs. I don’t strive to represent everybody and their momma (LOL). I want to make a true impact that keeps my client capacity low, but I am creating more things for people to consume and purchase, such as courses and other content where they can still access my expertise without having to work with me directly.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
People can work or collaborate with me by connecting with me via social media or my website. They can support me by engaging and sharing my content and offers. Every share helps!
