Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlyn Masterman.
Caitlyn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey started in 2014 when my first daughter turned one year old. As any mother does, I did everything possible to make her first birthday one that was special and memorable. When it came to the cake, I was so busy that I bought one from a local grocery store. Unhappy with it, I knew the next year I would do anything I could to make it myself so it was truly special for her. The next year rolled around and came my daughter’s 2nd birthday. I Youtubed, Pinterest, Googled anything I could on birthday cakes. I spent hours trying to make the perfect cake. As much as it tasted good, it looked horrible, but I made it, so I felt accomplished. As the years went on, I practiced more, dug into more information, and watched countless videos. The arrival of my goddaughter came and her birthdays became another opportunity to practice. Years went on and I finally got the art down and made every birthday cake for my daughter, goddaughter, and then my second daughter who was born in 2019. I finally had family & friends telling me I should do it for a living and sell my cakes. Living in upstate NY at the time there wasn’t a large population where we lived to make a good living out of it. Moving to Clayton in October 2020 opened up a large opportunity. I went back to becoming a stay at home mom and had more than enough time on my hands to continue to do what I love in a largely populated area. One day I took the leap, made a FB business page and put myself out there to my neighbors. In such a short time, I have grown largely and am almost fully booked every single weekend.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would definitely have to say it hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest struggles I’ve come across is trying so hard to perfect what you do so you can always have a satisfied customer that will come back time and time again. I’ve spent countless hours doubting myself and my art, spent nights awake till 2 am crying in frustration that I couldn’t do it. But at the end of the day, all the struggles are worth it when I see the happiness in my customer’s face.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a cake artist. I specialize in birthday cakes, cookies, cupcakes & desserts. I think what sets me apart from others is the heart and drive I have for the craft. I make sure customer happiness is my number 1 priority. Everyone deserves to have their special occasion be a memorable one with lots of love and sweetness. A simple or complex homemade cake or dessert can truly make an event what it is.
