Today we’d like to introduce you to Candra Murphy.
Hi Candra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved baking and used it as stress reliever or just to try out new recipes. I used to take the desserts I made to work and give them to co-workers. One day one of my co-workers said to me that I was giving away money and that people would be willing to pay for the desserts. From this conversation, CandieCakes was birthed.
In May 2015, we started out making cupcakes and cake pops and chocolate chip cookies. Since then, I have taken baking and decorating classes from some of the greatest confectioners in the African American baking community. Bakers like Porsha Kimble, Jeromie Jones and Jennifer “Gigi” Brooks. These classes helped to enhance my skills and boost my confidence to where we know offer specialty cakes, wedding cakes, birthday cakes, pound cakes, cupcakes, cookies, cake pops, and various other specialty desserts.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not always been a smooth road, but I promised myself I would never give up because baking & decorating are my passion. My biggest struggle is that I am a perfectionist when it comes to my desserts and I can be my own worst critic. I would look at the work of others and think that mine didn’t measure up, which caused me to underprice and not charge my with. After taking pricing classes and understanding that everyone is at different levels in this industry. I began to focus on making CandieCakes better and not comparing myself to others.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I enjoy the diversity of the Raleigh area. I don’t really have a dislike but would love to see more minority and black-owned business showcased more frequently.
