Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Scott.
Hi Jessica, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I am originally from New Mexico. My childhood was rough to say the least, and unfortunately, I lived in a household where I witnessed domestic violence on numerous occasions. Growing up, I knew that I wanted to make the world a better place, which I think is a different journey for everyone. In my early twenties, I made the decision to put myself through cosmetology school and haven’t looked back since. Now with 11 years in the industry, I have found passion and creativity through hair. My husband and I moved to Raleigh in February of 2020 from Austin, Texas and in October of that year I decided to open my own business, Sorbet Hair Studio. I love being able to help boost my client’s confidence or brighten their day through their hair service.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting my own business in the middle of a pandemic was not easy to say the least, but I took a leap of faith and went for it. Moving to a new city left me with no clientele and no idea how things would be in the current world but I believe that with hard work and passion, obstacles can be overcome.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have been a hairstylist for the past 11 years. I consider myself to be a color specialist with everything from balayage to fantasy colors. I also specialize in multiple types of extensions and cuts. One of the main things that I believe makes me stand out is not only my artistic creativity but my passion for people. There is no bigger reward for me than seeing a smile light up someone’s face after we finish their hair. I feel like I am truly changing the world, one smile and one head of hair at a time.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
It’s so important to surround yourself with a network of positive people. I believe when it comes to being an entrepreneur, or small business owner, there is so much that you can learn from others, not only people in your industry but other industries as well. Last year everyone was more isolated and working more from home so using social media, Facebook groups, and Instagram was key for me when it came to networking with future clients, business consultants, creatives, and photographers.
