Meet Jesús Villamizar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesús Villamizar.

Hi Jesús, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am born in Colombia, in a small town in the northeast of Colombia. I studied 3D Animation, then I did my degree in Industrial Design, and my postgraduate degree in Advertising Design. From the age of 18 (now I am 31), I started working in the advertising industry, as a printing and design assistant. little by little I made my way. In the last 10 years, I have worked as a design teacher, product designer, branding manager. Thanks to Instagram and social networks, I have been able to publicize my work, allowing me to have clients around the world, and with them to be able to leave Colombia and work remotely anywhere in the world.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been an easy road, in my country design and illustration are not professions that are taken seriously by the public, so you have to fight hard to make yourself known. This means that you must be constantly learning and evolving as a designer… When I decided to quit my last job in Colombia, to be able to live on my dream. it was one of the hardest decisions of my life. In the beginning, I thought that everything had been a mistake, but to keep knocking on doors and starting projects as an independent designer in my process of making myself known by my name and my work.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an industrial and graphic designer. I’m a specialist in product design and branding and I’m also an illustrator. My illustrations are used for t-shirts, packaging, and products. I have a very versatile style and I am quite methodological when designing, which makes me be very detailed in my work.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I am a true believer that you should be constantly learning new things, whether through YouTube, TikTok, or learning platforms.

Sometimes it is not easy to find people who want to share their knowledge, but it is not impossible. You just have to keep trying, failing, and learning with every step.
