Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenneth Ferguson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m the oldest of 16 kids. I was born in San Francisco, California on the West Coast where I have some early setbacks. My mother was a teenage mother who had me at 15 years old she’s going to get an abortion and when she heard my heartbeat for the final time when she went to the appointment to get the abortion, she decided not to and here I am and what she describes was that she promised God that she would have as many kids as she could and she did but unfortunately lead to other trauma and turmoil and things that would affect me and my siblings for the rest of our lives. I was in and out of foster care for 18 years nine months and it was probably some of the worst times in my life it was hard being a little boy in many cities where you knew no one you had no family it was hard to really connect I had a lot of abandonment issues a lot of trust issues I was hurt I was angry and always left with the void of wondering what it would be like to have a family and be a part of a family.
I’ve become into sports and love basketball and football track and soccer different things like that and that was my outlet and even when I straight away from that and was in the gang life and doing horrible things then it was it all led back to wanting to be a part of something bigger and be a part of something that I felt like I was in it and they love me and I love them back and that’s just how it was.
Then I fell in love with the camera. I love being a part of the environment and in high school, I had a photography teacher name is Mr. Kavanaugh and he really showed me how to be myself but also show what I saw through my lines or my eyes so that the rest of the world could see it and I started a portrait series in high school my junior year and I developed a sense of how to do portraits in at that time I was using a Nikon and 55 camera that was my very first camera it was a film camera and I learned how to develop film I learn how to properly light scenes in settings and learn everything analog in manual.
From there, as I graduated high school and made the decision to go to college I continue to do headshots and portraits and landscapes and really was a part of a co-op collective in Virginia where I went to school and I began to sell my images there to make money while I was in school then as I got a little bit older and I left school I didn’t finish but I left and I met my wife at school there as well and I pursued photography deeper I fell in love with the art it really showed me how to be a part of just everything that has to do with a persons life and then I started weddings and then I became a canon professional when I was 22.
From there, I learned the ins and outs of everything digital and crop sensors and you know what does it mean for a photo to have diffraction what does it mean when there is a crop sensor and how that will affect the outcome of your images you know I am doing weddings and events and things like that and then I got into video and really getting into the whole photography and just in life just Inc. so much of who I was and being able to show other people as well as kids and I was mentoring and speaking of schools just showing them how beautiful life can be when you take a step back to see it not only through your Eyes but with everyone else as well.
Today I still own a videography photography business where we service clients worldwide traveling doing commercials and things like that and I want to be better than I was yesterday. I believe that a person can continue and always learn from situations and scenarios that they are in as well as with people that they meet and from there that’s where you learn how to just pay for it and how to give back to those I gave to you and even those who never gave to you still want to make sure that you’re being influential to other peoples lives you never know with one simple act or action do to change someone’s perspective and give them the inspiration to carry-on.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Struggles along the way have been just having consistent relationships with those that you thought were there for you and in your corner. Early on in my marriage, we struggled with just life and finding the right careers. We lost everything in 2008 when the housing crisis occurred and had to start over. The joys of raising four Bi-Racial boys have been interesting but God has always provided and we’ve weathered through.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
What are things that I’ve enjoyed about being a photographer and filmmaker as well as a philanthropist and motivational speaker has been just the joys of seeing other people grow and seeing the value of relationships and what and how powerful words can be to another person.
I’ve learned early on that a man’s character is his faith and I believe that wholeheartedly some of the great things about being a photographer as I’ve had the opportunity to work with some great companies from Lenovo as well as Adidas and Nike and American Express and of course a lot of couples and capturing their special days in special moments in their lives always brings me joy.
One of the things that I really truly enjoy that I specialize in his lighting and being able to take a scene from what it is in transform it based on the lighting in positions of my clients are subjects and allowing for the Señorita to speak for itself in a showcase how beautiful this world is and help you I’ll beautiful people are.
I am most proud of just the tenacity that I have been able to get through so much and being able to start a business from the ground up and also being a part of so many lives in situations and businesses and seem to change in how important just a simple image or a film could be very proud of that.
What sets me apart from others is that I am uniquely and divinely made and just love what I have to do in this life and that inspires others.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The COVID-19 pandemic changed us individually as well. It may have also affected the world as a whole. But, as long as the vaccines are effective, we may return to a normal life. Some believe that if you have the vaccines, you are good to go, and that’s not the case.
I’ve learned that the value of relationships and how we are with one another is so important, even before covid I live my life and have encouraged others to SUCK LESS THAN YESTERDAY/DAY BEFORE and that Tomorrows not promised so act and live my today in the moment like tomorrow isn’t coming.
