Meet Kisha Stanback

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kisha Stanback.

Hi Kisha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, you would have thought I was the most outgoing child. I got straight A’s, played various sports, instruments, and was always at the forefront of something. I was never really good at any of these things except for writing poetry and public speaking. Writing poetry is where I felt the most comfortable and safe, but oddly I never really shared my pieces. I wrote about the stuff that was too hard to talk about like getting picked on because of my skin tone, my athletic build, and my Afrocentric features. For an exceptionally long time, I was uncomfortable with the way I looked and wanted to make changes. As I got older, I started noticing women like Serena Williams, Tika Sumpter, Naomi Campbell, my mother, and so many others that looked like me and could literally stop traffic with their beauty. I began to follow other women that resembled me and immersed myself in the diverse beauty of black women. The same features I and so many others that resembled me were tormented for were now hot commodities in plastic surgery offices. On a continued personal journey of self-love, I launched Accessorise in hopes to not only represent black women in jewelry but to magnify that you’re already perfect. My line strives to empower women of all different shades, shapes and sizes to love and celebrate the skin they are in. Accessories complement what you have and my brand, Accessorise is a celebration of your features.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ll be honest it hasn’t always been milk and cookies. Even today sharing my story is a little hard because it takes me back to a place where I wasn’t as confident as I am now. I often receive messages from women and girls who still face colorism and aren’t confident in the way they look. I don’t always have the answers but I try to share resources that have helped me along my journey. I was almost 30 before I really felt comfortable in my skin and just want young girls to get the encouragement they need to start sooner.

I’m also a solopreneur so I pack orders, manage my Instagram, attend vendor events (it’s hard setting up a tent solo, lol) and answer customer inquiries. I’m blessed to be able to do all this successfully with no previous experience but it not always easy. I am constantly learning and evolving to overcome any struggles I may face in my entrepreneurship journey.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Not only am I an entrepreneur I also am a full-time Training Manager. In this role, I am a people leader, write and design content for training, and have the opportunity to do a lot of public speaking. Although my business and my job are completely different, I am able to transfer skills to be successful in both. In both my roles, I am most proud of my ability to connect with diverse populations of people authentically and build relationships.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I wouldn’t consider “luck” a factor in my life or business. I can truly believe my faith, hard work, and determination have enabled me to have a vision and continuously execute. I’ve always been a go getter and live by my mantra “Prayer & Progress.” My worth ethic and vision have kept me focused and committed to bettering myself in my professional and personal life.
