Meet Mady Bowman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mady Bowman.

Hi Mady, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So I started in June of 2020 and it was all because I knew that I had wanted to start a business sometime and I thought that quarantine was the perfect time! At first, I wanted to do slime but when I did all my research, I realized that I didn’t have enough money to spend on those supplies and slime is not as popular as it used to be so I probably would not of done well. So I decided to do jewelry! When I was doing the research for jewelry, I saw some really cool earrings that I have never seen before so I figured out how to make that type of jewelry and started a business out of that! I slowly expanded from earrings to necklaces to hairpins which makes a huge variety of things to choose from. At first, I thought that the people that would buy from me would be my friends and family and that was the case, but when I started to expand, I noticed a change in my customers! Now I have customers from all over the US and all ages as well!! I also like to help out my community by raising money for charities! I have made it onto podcasts and tv and I have made a lot of friends!! I hope to continue to expand and continue to use my platform to help the community!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have had A LOT of challenges! I am 13 and I started my business when I was 12 and some challenges with that is that people in the beginning thought that my jewelry was not well made just because of my age so it was a little hard in the beginning. Also since I am young, I sometimes have to choose between my business and other stuff that I enjoy doing which is super hard because sometimes I just want to go and skate, hang out with friends, watch tv, etc. but I can’t because I have to focus on my business. Some other things are that there have been a few times when people don’t like specific things that I sell so they unfollow me or sometimes even block me. Something else is that it is way harder than you think to find supplies and think of new releases and all that fun stuff because online shopping is pretty tough when you have a budget set or when the person you usually buy your supplies from stops selling the supplies. But most of the time I figure out a solution even if I don’t like it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I make handmade jewelry and accessories in the comfort of my home. I specialize in customizable jewelry and accessories, earrings, necklaces, hairpins. I am known for a few things. One of them is being a young entrepreneur. Another is the uniqueness of my product and the last thing is how I give back to the community. I think I’m most proud of how far I have come in a year! I think that the main thing that sets me apart from others is how I raise money for charities. I have raised money for animals, breast cancer patients, another small business wanting to go farther, and LGBTQ+ community.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Some people don’t realize that I am a teenager, 13 and I started when I was 12. Also, some people don’t know that I have two moms!!
