Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Hauser.
Hi Mary, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 1999 at the age of 40, I landed what I thought was my dream job, head of marketing for a mid-sized German-based pharmaceutical company. I packed up my family and moved from NJ to NC. It was awesome, lots of travel, an office in both the US and Frankfurt and colleagues from around the world. Several years in, as I was preparing for yet another board meeting where I would stand in front of my mostly male German colleagues and be grilled on the success from past quarter and the plans for the upcoming quarter was when I first realized that the little voice in my head was telling me something—actually, it was screaming something: “Someday I’m going to be the board!”
As I was becoming less enamored with my job, the travel took me away from my family and my husband was often asked if he was a widower. I knew things had to change. On top of that, I worried because I was probably the only pharma exec that didn’t have a college degree. I decided that I would go back to school to get my degree in marketing– heck, I could apply what I was learning while I was working. At age 48, I graduated cum laude with a degree in marketing. The courses I enjoyed the most were not marketing but rather focused on leadership and organizational change. I was building the foundation for my future and didn’t even know it.
Just around my 10-year anniversary, I was asked to move on. There were many reasons for this– a new CEO, a merger with another company… blah blah blah. I made many excuses to myself, but truthfully, the company was growing in one direction and I in another.
I believe everything happens for a reason. The day after my last day, my mom became ill. I was free to fly home and spend a month and half at her bedside before she left us. That was a blessing! I then took the summer off to spend time deciding what to do with the rest of my life.
It was clear to me that most people that I worked with lived the life of “TGIF, and the dreaded Monday. I wanted to find more than just a job and wanted to find something that inspired me like the leadership courses, someplace to make a difference.
Then I started looking at possibilities from consulting to coaching and that’s when ActionCOACH found me. I attended my first workshop, and the coach asked the audience of business owners a question: Who wishes they were an employee and all the hands raised! Wow, many of the business owners were as discontented as the employees I left behind. So, I wanted to find a way to help both employees and business owners strive for more. In one of my courses, I learned that what makes people happy in life is the pursuit of a goal. I now had my goal, and I realized I had found where I was meant to be. ActionCOACH was the business model that fit my mission. Today, after ten years owning my coaching firm, I’ve been “the board” for hundreds of businesses in my community and I’ve lived my greater purpose to bring excitement of chasing a goal to business owners and their teams.
My first client has achieved almost everything on their dream board, and I have changed the lives of many hundreds of local business owners. That feels awesome! Getting the call that someone has hit $1M when they didn’t think they would hit $100K is great but hearing how they have changed their lives and their community is what drives me. Every business owner that goes out of business in my community feels like I’ve let them down.
My mission, and that of my awesome team, is to first help our clients dream big, plan an awesome life and build a business that will deliver that and more! We plan to coach over 30,000 business owners in North Carolina to transform their lives and that of their families and team members.
It’s time to stop accepting status quo, stop living on what’s leftover, stop putting up with less than an engaged team, and start your journey and reach for those BIG dreams. So, if you want more for your business, more for your life and are 100% committed to making that happen, we are glad you are here. Buckle up, it’s time to build an awesome life!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course, my first obstacle was the investment to get a business up and running being the primary income provider in my household, then making the jump and watching my savings dwindle while I got up and running. The second hurdle and the biggest one in my life was watching my firstborn child struggle with addition. The third hurdle was helping to raise my grandson while also trying to build a business as a woman in her 50s
