Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Manitsas
Hi Rebecca, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Prior to becoming a massage therapist, I worked as a PhD chemist for 10 years. During my tenure as a chemist, I found that my body couldn’t handle the type of stress that profession required. After healing from one of my many events, I was fortunate enough to experience bodywork from a practitioner that combined deep tissue, acupressure and Reiki. Through his mentorship, I found that I too was drawn to become a bodyworker and I got my license in 2004. In 2017, I expanded my sole practice into The Medical Massage Clinic of Durham, LLC. My vision is to create a space for clients to find highly educated and effective therapists to care for our community. Each therapist that comes on board brings a broader reach by offering advanced massage techniques wrapped up in their own artistic and intuitive approach to the client’s body. This allows The Medical Massage Clinic of Durham, LLC, a depth of service not found at other clinics.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Is there ever a smooth road in building a business or living a life? I have 2 amazing children, an ex, and a wife. The highs and lows of parenting while building/running a business are not for the feint of heart. Obviously there is also the business building as well that takes dedication and lots and lots of time. I have met and built relationships with other health care professionals in the area to answer questions about how my practice differs from others in the area. Making sure clients are well cared for and making sure therapists are well cared for also take up time and energy, but are the heart of the business and very important.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My mission statement for the community is to build a massage clinic that has highly trained massage therapists so that the community can come and see any one of us and be safe and get an amazing massage.
Medical Massage is a combination of modalities and education that allows the therapist to release injury or chronic pain in the client. This high level training is what sets us apart from other massage clinics. Our therapists have advanced training in the following modalities to help create the best service for our client’s needs each time. We offer prenatal, migraine relief, cupping, trigger point, reflexology, TMJ disorder, and lymphatic drainage.
Lymphatic Drainage is a technique during which extracellular fluid is returned to the circulatory system. This technique is used for clients with venous insufficiency, autoimmune disorders, like rheumatoid arthritis, or for those post cancer treatment. It is extremely helpful for people that have had lymph nodes removed during their cancer treatment.
TMJ techniques include gentle palpation of the muscles inside your mouth in addition to evaluating and treating any postural imbalances in your neck and shoulders.
Migraines are varied and need the support of a medical team. In addition to our clients working with their doctor, massage can help treat the tight musculature that comes along with the chronic pain of migraines. Specifically working with the scalp, face, neck and shoulder girdle, our therapists can release trigger points and taut tissue to help clients move in their body better.
What are your plans for the future?
I have always wanted to help train our massage therapy community at large. Some day, I plan on creating an advanced palpation class that helps my therapists and therapists at large gain more advanced abilities to read the body through their fingers. This training will help them learn how to get to some of the deeper layers of tissue safely and know how to help that tissue let go of the spasm. Why would the therapist work these deeper layers? When is it indicated to work at a deeper level? Is what you’re feeling a trigger point or weak muscle?
I have a few more years before that dream will occur, but it’s been on my mind for about a decade, so it will be exciting for me to make that dream come true.
