Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Schaler.
Hi Susan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my grooming career in Raleigh at Pet-a-Rama in North Hills mall in the late 60s. I moved to southern California where I opened my first Grooming Shop in Palm Springs in 1972. I moved back to Raleigh in 1980 and opened Canine Country Club and Pet Hotel with my Sister Lisa Keplar in December 1980. I am now sole owner. I love spending my time with dogs and the people who love them. The people who work for me have the same feeling about dogs and also want the dogs to have the best experience when they are with us.
We want dogs to enjoy coming to see us so we do all we can to give them an enjoyable time.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a struggle due to Covid-19. I had to shut down my business for s short time. I spoke with Wake county about being an essential business and was given permission to re-open. I have had to take precautions to protect my staff and the dogs that come in. It requires extra steps for cleaning as well as extra time.
We do not allow our customers inside and every dog who comes in must be bathed when it arrives as Covid-19 can be carried on their coats.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Grooming is an art. I love doing the dogs of owners who want a beautiful cut for their dogs.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up in Lexington Kentucky means being around horses, dogs and the people who love them. I spend most of my days with animals. My main interest in life has always been family and animals.
