Today we’d like to introduce you to Zulay and Steph Smith.
Hi Zulay and Steph, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The heart behind what we do has always been to provide unique, feel-good fashion for folks that is also good for the world and our future. Both being Graphic Designers by trade, we had held on to numerous printed materials (magazines, postcards, etc.) and never had the heart to recycle them. We knew there had to be a way for those pages to live-on in a sustainable fashion. Being eco-fashion enthusiasts to begin with, we were stoked to start creating upcycled wearable accessories (and being able to work with my mom is a huge plus!!). We soon realized the possibilities were endless when it came to rescuing typically discarded materials.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We’re both very optimistic people, especially when it comes to our business. Which has lead us to take risks both big and small. Many of the those risks turned out to be a big success but there were definitely risks that did not turn out how we thought. For example, investing time and money into products, ideas, events, etc., that did not prove their return; but we don’t let these challenges stop us. They’re almost necessary to ensure we’re staying on the right path!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We’re a mother-daughter duo who create jewelry from rescued materials; such aluminum cans, acrylics, laminates, etc. We’ve been redefining all things good since 2009. We’re most known for our BrewCuffs™ made from aluminum cans. Our goal from the beginning has always been to create items that are both good for the wearer and our environment.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
We’d have to say that it’s a combination of hard work and luck that has gotten us to where we are today. Without putting in the time, effort, and taking risks neither would be possible.
