Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Escalante.
Kimberly, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Essealante Designs began with a simple love for the ocean—and a shark tooth.
In the spring of 2021, my (now) husband and I visited Topsail Island after a friend told us you could find sharks teeth there. As a shark lover, I was instantly hooked. At the time, I was a middle school science teacher in Connecticut, and I had access to laser machines at school. I taught myself how to use them, first creating decorations for our wedding.
Our growing shark tooth collection sat in a mason jar—until I decided to make something more special. That’s when I designed my first shark-shaped shadow box. From there, I started creating more ocean-inspired designs to hold beach treasures like sea glass and shells.
In 2023, we moved to the NC coast full-time, and what started as a hobby turned into Essealante Designs—a small business helping others beautifully display their own beach memories. Today, we offer shadow boxes, magnets, ornaments, keychains, and more—all inspired by the sea.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think starting any business is easy! Up until June of this year, I was working full-time as an educator, leaving only evenings and weekends to work. I also had a lot of issues with my machines since getting my own when I moved here, so I’ve had to learn how to fix them along the way. I’m now a full-time mom while also running this business which is quickly growing!

I’m most proud of just building the business as much as I have in such a small period of time, through help and support from my husband, family, and friends. I have met the best of friends through this business and they are truly the biggest support. I love seeing my designs and products in peoples homes, on their purses, back backs, and Christmas trees.
What matters most to you? Why?
I just want to make sure that I am giving customers quality products for everyone to love. I want to make sure all of my customers are happy because it makes me happy seeing them enjoy the things I create. I bring a lot of love and passion into my work and to see others enjoy them, is the best feeling.
