Today we’d like to introduce you to Lacy Matusek.
Hi Lacy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My first exposure to photography was building a pinhole camera in middle school. I fell in love with photography and quickly moved on to experimenting with film and the whole darkroom process. I bought my first DSLR camera in high school and continued to learn and build my photography portfolio. When it came time to apply for college, I knew that I wanted to pursue photography. I learned about Appalachian State University’s Commercial Photography program, visited the campus, and fell in love. Over my four years in Boone, I learned all aspects of photography from lighting to the business side. During my senior year, I worked alongside my professors to build my brand and officially start my business. Since then, I have moved around North Carolina continuing to build my business and work with some of the most amazing clients.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There is nothing easy about starting and growing a small business, especially during a pandemic. There were so many times that I was worried about finding clients and making enough money to support myself full-time. It took almost 4 years before I felt financially stable and there were so many times that it would have been easier to quit and find another job. However, photography has always been my passion and I poured my heart and soul into turning my dreams into a reality.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I absolutely love wedding photography and getting to spend one of the most important and exciting days with people over and over again! One of the most important things for my clients, and future clients, to know is that photography is my full-time job and I truly treat it as such. My main priority is always my clients, their photographs, and helping make the entire experience a wonderful one. I have streamlined my entire editing process and have some of the fastest turnaround times in the industry. My personal goal is to have full wedding galleries delivered in a week, with sneak peeks even before that! In addition to that, I wanted to always make sure that my entire team upholds the standard of work that potential clients have seen through photographs, online reviews, and awards. A few years ago, I taught my fiancé everything I know about photography and weddings and he is now my dedicated second photographer. It is so helpful to have someone I can truly count on at each and every wedding.
