Today we’d like to introduce you to Starr Jackson.
Hi Starr, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 2017, I began my journey at the illustrious North Carolina Central University (NCCU) in Durham, NC on the National Student Exchange Program from Frostburg State University (FSU) in Maryland. I was there to complete a course in artist management and to explore a new school. I loved NCCU so much and I was happy there to the point that I didn’t want to go back to FSU. In 2018, I became a full-time student at North Carolina Central University.
From attending a performing arts school in elementary and middle school to playing the violin from third grade to 12th grade, and having a podcast I’ve always been a part of the arts and media. NCCU was where I really wanted to make a change and help others chase their dreams despite what industry they were in. I saw the need for an organization like mine at NCCU and decided to make my dreams come to reality in the fall of 2018. The organization and I were able to have numerous creative workshops, events, and even hold an awards show.
After graduating with a bachelor’s in Business Administration and a concentration in Management and a minor in Mass Communication, I decided I didn’t want to let NBTA go. During the pandemic, I did a lot of thinking about my life and decided in the fall of 2020 to establish NBTA as incorporation and a non-profit organization.
Nothing But The Arts Incorporated is currently on three college campuses and is looking to expand to other schools and communities. We are continuing to host events and workshops in person and through IG lives and Zoom. You can stay up to date by visiting our website, social media, and signing up for our newsletter.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting NBTA on campus was not fully hard, but I did have to face some struggles of getting everything together, finding an advisor and people to help start the organization. I was thankful for the people that I reached out to and who helped me along the way.
Currently, running a non-profit now and it’s a few obstacles I am facing. I am getting through them one day at a time and I have to remember that everything will work out in due time. Knowing your business is important and everything behind the scenes as well.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
To me, the most important quality to my success is passion, persistence, and creativity. If I continue to have passion behind everything I do, be persistent, and keep the creativity I know that I will eventually get to where I want to be.
Things may get tough, but I know that this is my passion and I have to keep going. Learn, work hard, always be a visionary, and never give up is the slogan I made for NBTA and I will continue to follow it.
