Rising Stars: Meet Tomisha Rice

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tomisha Rice.

Hi Tomisha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My hair journey started in the summer of 2000 in Bridgeport, CT. After countless attempts to learn how to braid from watching others, I took the initiative to teach myself. Optimistic, I began to braid my hair. I closed my eyes and started to cornrow on my head. Grabbing three strands of my hair, I began to cornrow in the back of my head. Since that moment, I have worked to perfect the art of braiding. While there were many days and years that I doubted myself, I did finally mustard of the faith and determination to obtain my Cosmetology License in 2013 from Virginia College.

In 2015 I joined Masterminds Design Studio, a commission-based Salon. Masterminds Design Studio helped prepare me for my next.

Like any journey, there are bumpy roads, detours, or thoughts of quitting. 2016-2018 that’s where I found myself. God began moving a few pieces to the puzzle around. For about a year, I worked from home, which put a pause on life as a Stylist bittersweet. I remember talking to my sister-in-law Shaleah Rice one day about why I stopped doing hair. At the time, my decision “seemed” logical. In the same week, I began to receive calls and texts from former clients wanting to know if I could do their hair. God reminded me that he was not done with me in that area of my life. Looking back, I can say he was teaching me to trust him no matter the situation.

In August of 2018, I took a leap of faith and contacted J Nicole, manager of Phenix Salon Suites. There were no Suites available at the time. Unbeknownst to me, I had already told a former client that I would be in my new Salon Suite in 2 weeks. I said, God, you have to come through. A few days passed J Nicole texted me asking if I still needed a Salon Suite. I said, ” yes, ma’am “!!

In November of 2021, I took another leap of faith. I wanted a bigger room with more exposure. This leap of faith was an upgrade. God opened the door, so I trusted him to provide the finances to sustain the blessing.

This August, Styles by Mish LLC will celebrate four years as a Salon owner.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
If I can be honest, the road to success has been just what it is supposed to be. I have experienced lows and highs that have helped me to mature and have a backbone in the Hair Industry. As a seasoned Stylist and Salon Owner, I understand that all money isn’t good money. Clients come. Clients go. Money will look funny. Constant change is the norm. Quality, consistency, and remaining teachable is the goal. As a professional service provider, Professionalism matters. Respect goes a long way.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Licensed Cosmetologist that specializes in protective hairstyles from actual natural hair care to extensions and more. I like to say more because I can do a lot more but for hand health reasons I do not offer chemical services. I am mostly known for braids… protective hairstyles.

I am proud of ME! My growth and potential. In both my personal life and career. I have countless stories of things that I could have focused on that would have kept me from growing into the woman you hear of today.

What sets me apart from others is me. No one can do what I do the way I do it. As stylists, we each have a different level of creativity. I now know who I am and what I bring to the table.

Any big plans?
Big plans…. Currently, in the process of obtaining my Instructor License. Another project that’s in the works is selling customized wigs.

I also create other wigs which will be displayed on this platform as well. I look for to my future because I believe I can go as far as I can see. My desire is for God to help me focus and stay the course.

Write the vision and make it a plan. I want to be financially secure in a way that I can show others how to get unstuck and break bad financial generational habits. Money isn’t everything but it’s the answer to a lot of things.
