Doctor Angela Clayton shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Angela, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Music makes me lose track of time because it allows me to disconnect from everything around me and reconnect with myself. It brings peace, clarity and sense of purpose.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Dr. Angela M. Clayton. I am CEO of Planting Seeds To Grow which focus on using research-based strategies to teach young children in all subject areas. I am also a singer, songwriter and guitarist with the stage name of AngieCee, bringing southern music tp life with a blend of blues, country, gospel and pop.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child I believed I was unattractive. I did not like my facial features. and being teased by other children made me believe I wasn’t smart or pretty. Over time I realized those beliefs came from cruelty and insecurity of others not from truth Now I see that beauty and intelligence come in many forms. And mine was always there waiting for me to believe in them.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I stopped hiding my pain when I realized that silence only protected the hurt, not the healing. The pain of my mother’s abuse once weighed upon me heavily, but I decided to turn that pain into power earning my doctorate and finding my voice through music. Now every song and every accomplishment is a reflection of strength, survival and purpose.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that what matters the most to me is my family. No matter what I’m doing whether its caring for mom, supporting my husband or encouraging my children, family is at the center of my heart. They are my why, the reason I push through and the foundation of all that I do.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people tell the story that through all of life difficulties, and hardships, I remained steadfast and true to myself. No matter the storms, I weathered them. And most of all I want people to remember that I valued education because no matter what life takes from you, knowledge is something no one can ever take away. Lastly, I want people to know that I advocated for the most vulnerable population, children and the elderly.
