An Inspired Chat with Jana Askeland

Jana Askeland shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Jana, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
This week I was one of 6 civiians (non-Ford employees) who go to spend a few days in Dearborn, MI and visit the New Ford Global Headquarters. I was able to see behind-the-scenes tech, innovation and concepts for now and the future. I also got to learn how to drive a stick shift from the Chief Engineer of the Mustang, who’s also a woman.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a mom who gives real life car reviews. As a boy mom and a soccer mom (six days a week) I know what families need or want in a new vehicle and I strive to make engaging content to highlight these vehicles and features. I worked directly with auto manufacturers for new car reveals and first drives. I spend quite a few weeks a year in Detroit for “The Big 3” (Ford, GM and Stellantis) and also go on elite whirlwind trips all over the country like a private concert at the Brooklyn Bridge for a new Jeep product launch. I’m so lucky to do what I love!

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The part that cares what others think. The internet can be a rude place and especially YouTube. The comments there are oftentimes heinous from keyboard warriors. I focus on the positives.. i’m not everyone’s cup of tea and if they don’t like me, they may not like the car and I can’t take it personally.

When did you last change your mind about something important?
I don’t really have a good answer to any of the questions in this section.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
It is. That’s why I call my self the real mom. Some days I struggle to get through the day and don’t feel very “presentable” while other days it seems like I have it all under control and figured out. It’s mom life. It’s real. Some days it’s not very pretty and I think we can all relate to that.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I dont have a great answer for any of these… focused on the now – not my legacy. My kids are my legacy – I want to help make them good humans.
