An Inspired Chat with Shanita Dixon

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Shanita Dixon. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Shanita, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Good morning! Thank you for having me.

Hmm.. integrity is most important, hands down. I prefer that folks are honest, accountable, and do right by people.

You could be smart with a captivating presence, but if you are using those powers for evil, I have no respect for you.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey hey, beautiful people! I’m Shanita, lovingly known as Nitadee. I’m an artist and a healer. I capture dope portraits of dope people, and I facilitate healing through tarot/oracle readings and Reiki energy healing.

I like to cultivate spaces where folks can be themselves, unapologetically. I’m like your cheerleader and your “cousin”. We have fun and celebrate your wins, and we can get deep, too. It’s all from a place of love.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was a wild, creative child at my core. Loved learning and exploring and creating.
The world told me I talked a lot, that I wasn’t cool or girly enough, or that I daydreamed too much. I grew up and realized the world doesn’t know anything.

As an adult, I made it my business to get back to that love for life, and to embrace my interests regardless of whoever judged me.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I realized that sharing what I went through freed other people just as much as it freed me. I got my power back from what hurt me by making certain topics less taboo. We feel more empowered when we realize we’re not alone. Now we talk about solutions and encourage each other. These wins get more personal because folks see the process, and I love it.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
I used to think I had to assimilate into what was popular to be accepted or loved. I thought that being different, being extra, or refusing to code-switch anymore was gonna turn people off. Now it’s my superpower.

I ain’t for everybody, but the people who rock with me love me as I am.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I’d stop worrying about this algorithm mess and just post.
I don’t care about trends, I just wanna show up and reach my people.
