Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaliyah Drew

Aaliyah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in an artistic family — everyone around me was drawing, painting, sculpting, and even woodcarving. You name it. I loved the messages and feelings art could communicate without words. But when it came to me, I couldn’t draw if my life depended on it. It never clicked despite how I hard I tried to better my hand at it. When I got to high school, my school opened the first graphic design class and she recommended I sign up. Immediately it clicked for me. I was able to put my ideas onto paper without errors. Since then, I was obsessed. It’s my job and my outlet and I couldn’t be happier to have found my passion over a decade ago.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Well… no! I had a teacher in high school who was able to teach me the basics, but the growth I’ve had since then has been on my own. In a professional setting, becoming a freelancer is one of the hardest moves I’ve made. Thanks to sources like Chris Do and Made by James, I’ve been able to self-guide myself into learning the in’s and out’s on my own time.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a graphic designer who focuses on brand design and marketing design. I’m most proud of my branding projects like Shop Finger Lakes as it is a complete execution of my design expertise and it has grown tenfold since I started.

What sets me apart from the others is my fusion of marketing strategy with design psychology. All of my design and branding choices integrate marketing strategy with design psychology for designs that invoke feeling and understanding simultaneously.

What matters most to you? Why?
For my work, what matters most is collaboration. I genuinely include my clients in my design process from start to finish for an end product we all love. No surprises.
