Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Bryant.
Hi Abby, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My interest in music began at a very early age in the church where my dad was the music minister and I began singing on Sundays and playing piano and guitar. I always loved music and became a music major in college, but it wasn’t until a group of my high school friends at Appalachian State University suggested we start a band that I began to see music performance as a real career option.
With my background of mostly just gospel music, I started singing in bars around town in Boone, NC, and quickly fell in love with the live music scene. As my college years were coming to a close, I made the decision to pursue music full time. A few years have gone by since then, and I’ve stayed the course of pursuing my dream.
I’m proud of the progress I’ve seen with my team and me as we’ve navigated the tough waters of the music industry and forged a path for ourselves to perform at some of our favorite regional and national venues and festivals. I’ve met so many wonderful people along the way and have had a wealth of fulfilling experiences and life lessons I’m so grateful for. The band and I just released our very first full-length album this fall! It’s been a joy to grow together in our journey.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road has been anything but smooth at times. In the beginning, I had a lot of naysayers and doubters try to steer me away from choosing a career in the music industry. I’ve had many difficulties with building a like-minded, driven team at times, and I’ve had other folks in the music industry try to control my artistic, business, and personal choices in ways that have made me repeatedly uncomfortable.
Times have been tough, but challenges present me with so much opportunity for personal growth as I make my way through uncharted territory, build new leadership skills, and find new ways to set boundaries and communicate clearly with others.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m the lead singer and frontwoman of Asheville, NC-based band Abby Bryant & The Echoes. I specialize in blending together what I love most about “old school” music — soul, rock, gospel, country, etc. with my own more modern spin to create unique and vulnerable original songs. I’m most proud of completing my first full-length album Not Your Little Girl this year as a culmination of the evolution of my style and sound since the launch of my music career in 2018.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
It seems straightforward enough, but if you find something you love to do and have a knack for, it really just comes down to how much you’re willing to work and stay driven towards your goal. With faith in yourself and focus on your mission, it’s amazing what can happen.
