Today we’d like to introduce you to Al-Nisa Lawson.
Hi Al-Nisa , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started comedy in 2016, right after my divorce, when I went to see a friend do an open mic and support her. When I arrived at the show, she chickened out. She declined to do the open Mic. I crossed her name out, and I went back. I went up in her place. The producer of the show asked me afterwards. Had I done stand-up before I told her no, and she asked me to return, and that’s how it all began, and I’ve been doing it for about 10 years; come October, it’ll be 10 years in comedy. It’s been a wonderful journey working with a lot of experienced comics and working with new comics, running various shows through the years I ran open mics, book shows, produced private events, and am still producing some private events and looking at other additional opportunities in spinoff events that we can do in the next coming year
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not always been a smooth road. I used to have shows weekly, and the economy has taken a turn; financially, the consumers/ audenience has to be more selective about what shows to attend depending on tickets, food and etc. So shows have scaled back, and we can only work with venues that can sustain our budget. Comedians, performers, and flyers need money to promote the shows and have quality shows in the area; they all can’t be free.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Since launching my career at an open mic in 2016, I have hosted open mics, booked and produced private events, and I am currently looking into new spinoff event opportunities for the coming years.
As a comedian, I blend humorous insights, quirky details, and storytelling into my stand-up. I have performed at notable festivals like Black Girls Giggle in New Orleans, Eyes Up Here Comedy, and NC Funniest. My international experience includes Laughter on the Lockdown in South Africa, and I have appeared at venues such as Comedy in Harlem, the Atlanta Comedy Theater, Goodnights Comedy, and Raleigh Improv.
Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of opening for prominent comedians, including Joe Clair (BET), Donnell Rawlings (Chappelle’s Show), Just Nesh (Kevin Hart’s Hart of the City), and Reginald “Bruh-man” Ballard (Martin). I also produce comedy events nationwide and remain a fixture in the North Carolina comedy scene.
What were you like growing up?
As a child I was energetic and outspoken. I had various interest in music, writing and my journey in college led me to become an assistant editor for a pop magazine and work for a music company in NYC in the 90’s-2000’s. This defiently assisted and formed my current career in producing and performing comedy.
