Check Out Amari Alexander’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amari Alexander

Amari, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my music journey at a very early age singing in church, and I’ve been singing ever since. Singing in church as a child is where I received most of my initial training and experience in groups, choirs, and as a soloist. I’ve always had a strong love and passion for music and I truly feel that making music, singing, performing, and being an artist is what I was born to do. My love and passion for music led me to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA where I graduated from in May 2023 with a Bachelor of Music in Performance. During my time in college, I began writing and producing original music and working on developing my own sound and voice as an artist. During that time I also started recording my music & performing my original music live for the first time. In November of 2023, I released the first batch of songs I wrote & recorded on my first EP titled “The Intro To Love”. Currently, I am recording, writing, and producing new music, working on my debut album, preparing to do more live performances, and writing, and producing music for other artists.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not always been smooth & I have dealt with some challenges and struggles along the way. One major challenge or obstacle I dealt with was having low confidence, low self-esteem, self-doubts, and not feeling that I was good enough or talented enough as a singer/artist. Those things really affected me before attending college and during my first few semesters in college. I had goals of performing, doing my own shows, and recording original music when I began, but I started to let those things affect me and hold me back from actually doing it. One day I decided I wouldn’t let those things stop me anymore. I had to change my mindset, believe in myself, and tell myself that I was good enough, talented, able, and capable as an artist, and to do everything I wanted to do musically. Along with changing my mindset, I also had to put in the work & be dedicated to my craft and my plans.

As I began to build my confidence and self-esteem and put myself out there, I began receiving opportunities to do shows, and I started working on my music with a band I put together. With my determination and a positive mindset, I was able to overcome those mental obstacles and do multiple shows under my own name at my school and other venues, record music for two of my projects, and I graduated having accomplished my goals.

Sometimes now I’ll have moments of self-doubt, but I remind myself of how I didn’t let doubts or negative beliefs stop me in the past, and how I pushed past those things to accomplish past goals. Remind myself also encourages me to keep working and moving forward to accomplish the new goals i’ve set for myself. I’ve learned that I can overcome any obstacles or challenges I face as long as I have a positive & determined mindset, a strong work ethic, prayer, and faith, and a determination to accomplish all of my goals.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a singer/artist, songwriter, producer, background vocalist, vocal arranger, and band leader. As an artist, I primarily perform & release R&B/Soul music. I’m an artist who not only loves recording music, but who also has a passion and love for performing live. While at Berklee, I gained a lot of live performing experience and the feeling I always get on stage while performing is truly a one of a kind feeling that I always cherish.

I feel that what sets me apart as an artist is my unique voice and style. I’ve been told by many that my voice and my style of music is a mix of old-school and new-school R&B that’s not often heard today. As an artist, my focus is on creating, recording, and performing music that is authentic to me, has meaning, and speaks to the soul. I believe music is very powerful and spiritual and it’s always my goal to create music that means something and that people can truly feel when listening. My love and passion for music drives me to do what I do, but I also feel that my purpose and mission is to spread love, healing, and good energy to the world through music.

I recently released my debut EP titled “The Intro To Love”. The EP is all about experiencing and falling in love for the first time, and all the songs are really close to my heart. I’m very proud of that release as it’s my very first release and so much went into creating it, from writing, rehearsing, recording, and releasing the music. Currently, I am working on recording my full-length debut album. I started recording this music in early 2023 and I was blessed to record the majority of the project in the studio with my entire live band in 2 sessions. The new music I’m working on & the music on my album is really special and meaningful and I can’t wait to share that music with the world.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I think it’s important to have a mentor or people you can turn to for advice, and also a good network. While in college I had a lot of great professors, but I had two vocal professors in particular who became more like mentors to me and showed me the importance of having a mentor. They not only helped me grow and develop as a vocalist, but they also gave me a lot of great advice, guidance, and encouragement. They both saw my potential and the greatness and talent inside of me, even when I didn’t really see it myself, and they believed in me enough to push me to work harder, not be lazy, and be my best self. I found that having a mentor was very helpful for me, and it helped me grow and develop faster than I probably would have trying to figure things out all by myself.

I also think networking is great and important in any field that you’re in. I’ve been blessed to meet so many great artists and musicians around my age who I’ve networked with, and now they’re people who I know I can call on to work with and even get advice from, and vice versa. Although networking can be a scary concept, and I know I can be very introverted in public spaces, I’ve found that by just being myself and sharing my talents and gifts, I’ve connected with and will continue to connect with the right people.
