Today we’d like to introduce you to Benjamin Young.
Hi Benjamin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ll preface my answer with if anyone out there would like to hear the drab details, then I am more than happy to talk your ear off about it at a show or over coffee. Haha. Scott, Josh, and I formed Boy Named Sue in the Spring of twenty-one, shortly after the release of our first record, “the way I was.” We have all three been playing music in Raleigh/North Carolina, for over a decade, whether together or in separate bands, and the Rock & Roll gods offered the opportunity to come together and continue this journey. What a joy it’s been!
You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
If you’ve been in a band or have been an artist long enough, specifically speaking in pursuing music, we all share highways of rough roads. Booking, touring, writing and releasing music, member changes, labels (should that be something you or your band should prioritize), band chemistry, etc., are just a few bumps that come to mind. But there is beauty and something to be learned in all of them. What is pursuing a dream or a journey that you deem worthwhile, not without a few bumps in the road? Those moments test you and give you a chance to reflect, help sharpen you if you’re willing to trust the process.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I play guitar and sing vocals in Boy Named Sue. Josh Grady, who plays bass and sings harmonies/backing vocals, and Scott Jackson, who plays drums, make up two-thirds of this rock and roll trio. We don’t specialize in anything, but we care a lot about our songs and bringing all that comes with them to the stage each time we play.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
To our familiar faces, we love you and thank you for being a part of this band. For anyone new reading, thank you for taking the time, and to all, we hope to see you at a show soon!
