Check Out Breathe Studio’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Breathe Studio. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Breathe Studio was created by two Durham natives, Jessica Burroughs and Kimberlee Wynn in September 2020. As COVID-19 was having an effect on youths’ mental health and social needs, Jessica and Kimberlee quickly sprung into action to fill those gaps. As seasoned dancers and performers Jessica and Kimberlee are committed to providing quality instruction that develops and instills an appreciation for the art of dance. While providing a safe space, not only for dance, but for learning, sharing, and expressing, they are building a foundation with Breathe Studio that instills self-love and confidence, respect, and discipline in all dancers from all backgrounds.

In October 2020, to kick off our Fall 2020 session, Breathe Studio was featured in NC native, Rapsody’s “12 Problems” music video. The video included choreography from both Jessica and Kimberlee and featured Breathe Studio dancers. Presently, Breathe Studio is operating out Triangle Dance Space in Durham, NC with the hopes of finding our permanent home in Spring 2022. Breathe Studio has completed their second session and is gearing up for their big studio performance titled Inhale. Exhale. Experience. Breathe. After summer break, Breathe Studio will be holding Company auditions and gearing up for the 2021-2022 Season.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like with any starter business, we have learned many lessons and overcome many obstacles. Our biggest obstacle is space, especially during COVID.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Breathe Studio is Durham’s premiere studio that values the significance of technique and HBCU dance and twirling. We specialize in Acro, Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Lyrical, Hip Hop and proper HBCU technique with certifications in Acrobatic Arts and Dance Teachers of America. Breathe Studio is committed to bringing quality dance instruction without the traditional dance studio norms. Breathe Studio provides our dancers with more than just dance classes and performances but an opportunity to participate in a unique experience that extends beyond the dance floor. An experience that includes meditation, health and fitness, resume preparation (professional and dance), audition preparation, forever mentorship, and more.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Durham is a forever growing city full of diversity and culture. As natives, we have seen downtown go from office buildings and hotels to restaurants, bars, outdoor events, concerts, performance spaces and so much more. Durham is absolutely on the list of up and coming cities.
