Check Out Cassandra Durham’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassandra Durham.

Hi Cassandra, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Black Girl Candle Company launched in July 2020 to respond to the racial and civil unrest our country was experiencing. We were bombarded with images of confrontations, anger, and violence, and I wanted to create a product for people that would warm their hearts while stirring their souls. Our journey began transparently on social media, with me creating dialogue and questions about self-care – and how we care for ourselves during times of adversity. Usually, I’d also be on camera playing with candles, wax, and fragrances simultaneously. Naturally, people became curious about what I was doing before long; we developed a following. People began asking if they could purchase the candles I was creating before we realized it, Black Girl Candle Company was born.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oh my goodness, the struggles of starting a business have been insane. I am a social worker and know very little about running a business. As a result, we’ve often had to scramble to create a learning curve. I’ve taken basic business classes and found mentors to help me along the way. I’ve learned a lot from my mess-ups and screw up.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In my professional life, I am a social worker who has spent her entire career working on HIV/AIDS. I’ve always been an advocate and defender of those who may not be able to access services or the ability to help themselves. I am most proud of the work I’ve done with women in the form of support groups and mentoring sessions.

What’s next?
I plan to grow Black Girl Candle Company into a multilocation home fragrance company. We also offer soul-stirring candle-making experiences to empower, uplift, and strengthen the faith of others. We hope to be able to take our candle-making experiences on the road to other cities as well.

Pricing:

  • 20.00 for 8 oz candle
  • 33.00 for our 16 oz candles
  • 35-45 for our candle making experiences
