Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Julick.
Chelsea, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have been working in the design industry for about 10 years now and during this course time, I narrowed down my true love for design, which is in the details.
I created my first macrame wall hanging while I was pregnant, actually as a gift for a close friend – I fell in love with being able to create with my hands. Since then, I have had a baby, and have moved from San Diego, CA to Roxboro, NC. I now create custom macrame decor for homes and boutique shops throughout the country.
I thrive on pushing my creative boundaries, when a client comes to me with a vision we are able to create one-of-a-kind pieces. I love all things design and am so grateful I am living out my dream!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, I would have to say my biggest challenge being a business owner has been myself and overcoming my fears. I have had to come to realize that growing a business does not happen overnight – and the harder I work the better the outcome.
I have learned to keep creating, being consistent, and showing up even when I would sometimes lack the desire or motivation. Learning from my mistakes instead of beating myself up and being apprehensive to move forward. Taking “no” as motivation and not allowing myself to feel discouraged.
I have been able to seek inspiration from other wonderful women-owned businesses and podcasts knowing that I am not in this alone and we tend to experience similar emotions.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Modern Shag by CJ is handmade fiber art inspired by the ’70s shag era with a modern influence.
I have a passion for textures, patterns, and color play – pushing the limits combining all three elements in my art. I offer a wide range of fiber art, using different mediums to either create designs using knots or color mixing and hand-dying tapestries. Each piece is unique and one-of-a-kind.
I am most proud of my custom works – it is always special working with a client and being able to bring their vision to life through my creations. From pieces that resemble their landscape to be featured in their living room or for special events such as ceremonial wedding backdrops.
What are your plans for the future?
I am looking forward to growing the brand Modern Shag by CJ.
I am working toward getting my fiber art featured in hotels, as well as having more custom displays in boutique stores. I am working with my first bride, we are creating a special backdrop for her wedding ceremony and a few other key elements throughout her wedding decor!
I love what I do and I am so grateful to be able to continue to share my work.
